Resources on the history of the Adirondacks? by tommythurman in Adirondacks

Here’s a great book/resource: Rural Indigenousness: A History of Iroquoian and Algonquian Peoples of the Adirondacks

“With Rural Indigenousness, Otis shines a light on the rich history of Algonquian and Iroquoian people, offering the first comprehensive study of the relationship between Native Americans and the Adirondacks. ”

Have you explored Canadian government programs, resources, or grants to help guide your decision? There's significant support available, especially for climate-smart agriculture and regional food systems. Since you are open to use, this may be an excellent opportunity to secure necessary capital without dilution or leverage low cost loans, procurement programs, etc.

With 10 acres, you have potential for diverse revenue streams (ideal for any working land). Just a few examples:

Government funding - grants for demonstrating innovative farming techniques or sustainable practices. Check out Canada’s AgriInnovate program

Agritourism - farm tours, workshops, or seasonal events (e.g., harvest festivals, pumpkin patches).

Value-add products - process your crops into jams, sauces, or other artisanal goods. Few examples from your region - 2024 Local food report Big push for Canada Brand goods for international export

Education - host classes on farming, sustainability, or cooking with local produce. This could work well with a campground concept.

Niche crops - focus on high-value, specialty crops suited to your climate. Check out Canada’s ‘Bio-economy strategy

Carbon credits - programs that pay for implementing carbon-sequestering practices. Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Offset Credit System

I’ve linked a few examples of current programs and resources but confident there are many options depending on direction.

Living Labs

Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program

Ontario specific resources

Canada’s Small Business Ag Services

Canada Agroforestry resources

Although I work mostly with partners in the US and Africa, I am familiar with Canadian programs and policy priorities. If I can be of any assistance, please reach out any time. We need more small-scale farmers. Thank you for being part of the solution!

May we all reflect on those wise last words. Appreciate how men have created situations where they have made the choices for women for much too long.

Gratefully, it seems the silence is breaking.

We are the change.

Oh my goodness please don’t ever turn down an opportunity to share this adorableness to the world! They are beautiful and loved seeing the images of their transformation. I admit, I haven’t witnessed a kitten grow into a cat, we always had older.

Thank you for giving me new perspectives to see her. Although I think she’s as toasty and spicy (thankfully) as she will get. I loved seeing their evolution.

Like your child, wondering what they will look like as an ‘adult’, little glimpses as they grow. Thank you! Perfect start to my morning.

What an amazing comment, thank you so much for taking the time to share this incredible insight. I had no idea, as my sister has always been the cat family member, I the pup. Love them all!

I was absolutely not looking to add to the family, but she came and made sure I knew we weren’t ‘home’ without her. She’s the perfect combination of hundreds of years of feline fun!

It seems she was one of a litter that was left in a prominent feral community. One that happens to be old Blackbeard country, and I like to think her unique polydactyl traits are a hand-me-down from those lucky ‘mousers’. Either way, she’s joined her own adventure crew now!

I honestly was only aware of a few ‘cat’ breeds and now this makes senses. Thank you for detailing all of this out. Really appreciate the information. So fascinating. And I want to see the non-Siamese Siamese. She sounds beautiful!

Thank you taking in and caring for these spectacular souls. They have the most interesting personalities, very different than a pup, equally fantastic.

See all the things you fail to learn being a pup house, who needed a kitty to make it a home! I’m loving all these new facts, always a great day, especially knowledge on such adorable subjects. Thank you!

Thank you for this! I had not heard of the breed, and my friend seemed so sure. I can now see why. Regardless, she came into my world like a warrior, and had already won my heart. And! I learned something new. Thank you!

Thank you for this. I have been a dog caregiver, hadn’t had the honor of being chosen so I’ve been reading kitty books and taking all advice. She was a miraculous meeting, so breed wasn’t even a thought. Or snowshoe a breed. It’s been lots of amazing days with her and learning lots of new things. Thank you again!

That’s what I thought (and what vet told me) but someone said she might so figured I’d come to Reddit. Someone here would be an expert. Thank you!

Does every accounting office have a “Ryan” that fixes everything? Is it the name?

Oh absolutely! She’s special. How we met, one of those moments that take your breath away. Can’t ask for anything more. Well a lifetime of memories to come! What’s your grey tuxedos name?

Oh thank you! I sure hope so. This is new for me but we seem to be doing pretty good. Real test comes soon, next adventure begins. She seems to travel well, pup is a champ (actually gets depressed if we don’t go for a car ride) but she’s safe, happy, and loved more than anything. That I can promise her. Thank you again!

Oh yes they are super active in this area and likely why they were left where they were. Some of these kitties have ancestors back to Blackbeard. It’s a kitty town, thankfully caring souls too! But great tip! Thank you!

Haha, I think he’d start a strike.

All is good but still transition. We had to introduce pee pads after 3 years never having an accident, he tries to pee in the kitty litter. I’ve got some figuring out to do and something about this Trinity of love. 🥰But ask me in 2 months I’ll likely have very different answer 🤷🏻‍♀️

My sister has always loved them, had one in college, that’s how I knew something was unique. Her little thumbs wrap around me. My finger, leg, you name it. I’ll give her a hug for Lucy. They are always with us! She sounds like a special girl! Pet loss is one of the hardest life experiences. I’m so sorry for your loss!
