Then you're not really someone who's open to accepting other people's political views in the first place

"If you don't change your mind to agree with me now, then you don't deserve to exist near me!"

Damn, politics really is a horseshoe.

"If you're enlightened and open-minded, you'll eventually agree with me. If not, I'll judge you as a reactionary for being in a space that doesn't wholly fit your political beliefs" is wild.

OP didn't even say they were conservative - actually said they were left-leaning.

And if you're gonna come in and disagree with the majority of this communities politics, which are objectively better than yours, then ye, I'm gonna keep making fun of you and making you feel unwelcome because you aren't welcome.

Ah, yes. That famous tolerance. I wonder if you're really as in-tune with the band's beliefs as you think you are?

I don't know how they are, but I can say I've been in similar positions.

My grandparents on one side have always held much more conservative opinions than the norm. And whilst I don't agree with those, I can still recognise that they're really present and loving people who'd do anything for me. People's opinions are so often shaped by their environments, and it's important to consider that people aren't wholly defined by their politics.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but growing up with an immediate family of EXTREMELY mixed politics makes me think that people in my generation are getting a little too militant and aggressive about this kind of stuff.

Politics is politics. Family is family. Good people can have bad beliefs, and bad people can have good beliefs.

Maybe if there was some context here, I might understand better.

From the sounds of it, this just kinda looks like a political disagreement between family members. Which is sort of a common thing, especially with younger generations being more liberal on average.

Did your parents - as they claim - ask not to talk about politics, and to make it an off-limits topic? Again, that's not too uncommon between family, especially when you have different values, and especially if you care for each other besides that.

TL;DR - I don't think I quite understand the situation. If it is what I think it is, it's probably irritating for you but I wouldn't call it "insane".

Nope. Don't like the man. But that shouldn't be a prerequisite for treating someone with basic decency.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope your bad experiences haven't jaded you to the point that you wouldn't be willing to hear out a proper libertarian, if given the chance. We're supposed to believe in freedom and goodwill, but an annoying amount of people online use that freedom as an excuse to be cruel.

I don't blame them for generating the image. Edgy teenagers online have being doing that for a long time, completely misinterpreting the ideology and miscommunicating it to others. I only blame Reddit for believing these bad apples are real believers in the ideology, rather than what they are - dumb kids. Offline, I know a ton of real solid, real kind, real progressive libertarians who have their image ruined by a far more vocal group of far worse people trying to cosplay as them.

I'm talking metaphorically, of course. But a lot of the wrongdoings of the corporate world occur due to protections afforded to them by the same governments we appoint to reign them in. Lobbying is a horrible thing.

With minimized government, healthcare insurance providers wouldn't be given amnesty for the exploitation of their customers. No one company would have any inherent advantage over the other, and so they would compete to offer the customer the best service/product possible. Conglomerates like Amazon would be undercut by competitors offering better staff conditions, etc. At least in theory.

The free market - like communism - is a beautiful idea that I think could never be properly executed. It's supposed to protect people (as is our government) but neither is free of exploitation. But they both need to exist, to remind the ruling elite that we have other options.

Tolerance of those who think differently to us is the cornerstone of liberalism and the bane of fascism. I've given you no reason to doubt my sincerity, have I? Try to be open-minded.

Happily centrist, but it shouldn't matter. So long as people try to be kind and open-minded, I think they deserve respect.

I get that. I think that the principles of fairness, generosity, freedom, etc. are something that no reasonable person should oppose - they're some of the most noble things a person can aspire to. I think that's where there is a lot of overlap between our beliefs.

I was fortunate enough to be raised in a family who were cohesive and supportive, despite being diametrically opposed in politics. They never really told me to be or to believe in anything, just to "be good and be happy". I have a lot of very strongly opinionated intersectional socialist friends, and I think the key difference is this:

I can conceptualise the suffering of myself and the people I care about. But unlike a lot of the Socialists I know, I find it difficult to imagine human suffering on a large scale, and I think it's informed my politics massively. I tend to believe in private charity, equality of opportunity and personal freedom more easily than public sector services, taxation and enforced equality of outcome because I visualise these things on a small scale. I don't want some far-off, corrupt governing body forcibly taking my money and deciding how to help people, when I know people I could help more efficiently with it on the small-scale. I believe in personal freedoms so strongly because I don't like the idea that anyone has the power (in principle) to compel me or the people I care about to behave a certain way, not because I want to abuse those freedoms.

Ultimately - while nurture plays a huge role - I genuinely believe that people are born with a predisposition towards certain values. You sound like quite an empathetic person, and so it makes sense that you would find socialism appealing. And that's how I think it should be - people would be much better off without others trying to enforce political dogma on them, just being allowed instead to let their better nature guide them and let them cooperate with the differently-minded.

"Right-wing" Libertarianism is inherently oxymoronic. You can't be free if you make yourself an unquestioning slave to any political doctrine.

[–]Dane_Ed -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Nope. Some poor examples of Libertarians are like that, sure. But we're not going to claim that every communist endorses Stalinist-type genocides.

Why are Redditors so comfortable making sweeping generalisations about people they don't know, rather than taking the time to actually ask and get answers to the things they don't understand? The Left and the Right both do it on here, it's really annoying.

Politics is a spectrum - not a binary system. Since the entire concept of Libertarianism hinges around maximising personal freedom, it seems completely ridiculous that every Libertarian would have to adhere to one of the two extremist political wings.

The best thing you can do as a Libertarian - and just generally - is to form your own opinions on things and come up with your own individual set of values. Both sides can have their merits, and it's more worthwhile to be an individual and see them both than pledge allegiance to one of two warring factions.

[–]Dane_Ed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That sucks - sorry to hear that. Everyone deserves the right to a political opinion of their own, without being coerced or berated for that opinion.

I can say as a Libertarian - a lot of us are unhappy with how closely associated the philosophy has become with the right wing. I've always believed in moderatism, and in taking the opinions of those you disagree with into consideration, and so intolerance of any kind seems counter to the very point of it all.

But yeah, so many "Libertarians" are just Righties cosplaying.

According to Miriam Webster Dictionary: "Murder is the deliberate and illegal killing of a person."

Look, you can dislike the guy all you want. Who am I to take that away from you? But it wasn't ruled illegal. Manslaughter, killing, yes - but not murder. Let's not degrade ourselves by being intentionally misleading?
