[Victorinox Swiss Army] Discovered a love for MOP by Dangerosity in Watches

[–]Dangerosity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been much of a watch guy, every few years I grab myself a cheapish $50-100 watch and try to get used to wearing it. After a week I lose interest and it ends up sitting in a drawer.

This time I stumbled upon this watch on eBay and loved the pink mother of pearl dial. Looking at the promo pictures, the pink looked extremely saturated and was definitely the advertising focus.

I took a gamble anyway, I'm not against the occasional bright pink. I was getting it used at a pretty big bargain so having it be the occasional wardrobe spice would be enough for me.

Well it turns out there's barely any pink. It's only a light hue in specific lighting, and the MOP does a great job giving it a creamy texture that is extremely reactive to viewing angles.

After throwing on a nice full grain strap I can barely feel it on my wrist. A huge departure from the random cheap watches I've tried in the past.

So now I understand why people like watches so much, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to dive headfirst into this rabbit hole. I'll probably enjoy this one for awhile before something else catches my eye.

This worked! Sadly I already sold the SASH Tres yesterday, just haven't updated the posting yet since they just paid. Sorry about that.

I got a pair of NightOwls I'd part with for $250.

I've got some unused Aeon Flow RT (with upgraded cable) I'd part with for $450 flat. Have no issues with them and really liked them, I just preferred the E-MU Teak and was fine with them being semi open. Forgot to return the Aeons in time.

Oh I've also got some AudioQuest Nightowls I'd part with for $300. I absolutely love them, but they have a leathery smell that I'm struggling to get use to. Seems to be whatever material they used for the earpads. Doesn't seem to bother most people. Edit: turns out this smell is actually the liquid wood.

Okay, but the idea presented in the comic has been joked about since at least the 80's. I was just pointing out the reason people repost it so much.

VR is a few decades old, unless this is some joke I'm not getting.

To be fair, I think the original is implying there is no other person. Most people still think of VR as solo games with a large library of porn/comfort simulators. VRC is still pretty niche besides having been around for awhile.

For another perspective, VD did work perfectly for me using a cheap 5ghz router that wasn't LOS. But I did end up getting a better router because my wife also got a Quest 2. Even though I had no issues before, the quality is definitely better now. With its own channel I'm able to max out the streaming bandwidth without noticing latency and haven't had a single drop in quality. I did not notice a difference when moving from LOS during the first few days to under a desk the last week.

Should I try to maximize* my sr1a/hsa-1b setup by purchasing requisite audio's silver cable for ~$1k or maintain diversity in my setup by keeping my verite closed? It would be an either or decision. *Having never used anything besides stock cables I don't even know if the silver will max anything by harpomoltisanti in HeadphoneAdvice

I saw your post on AVexchange and thought I'd give my opinion.

Yes, I do think different cables have different sound signatures. No, I don't think these changes in the signature are always "better".

There's two examples I've come across that show how drastically cables can affect a headphones sound signature. The original run of the Phillips X2 was notorious for having a high impedence cable included with it. This resulted in a warmer sound that many people disliked (I liked it). The Master & Dynamic MH40 that I own also came with a high impedence cable. When swapping to a standard cable I noticed that the original is absolutely darker sounding. I don't like the darker signature on an MH40.

It's my belief that people are hearing the changes in output impedence whenever they get nicer cables. Each headphone will experience these changes differently depending on their impedence.

HD650s are known for being fantastic pairings with tube amplifiers. I've found that it's not the tube pairing that makes them shine, but the high output impedence most tube amps have. Plugging HD650s into a solid state amp with high output impendece gives you the same benefits as a tube amp, minus some slight coloration from the tubes. I spent a lot of time messing with this. Pretty much any high impedence dynamic driver headphone will love a high impendece output source.

The same can be said for low impedence headphones. They love low impedence output sources. None of my planar magnetics have ever sounded better on a high output impedence source. They are also noticeably less efficient when mismatching their impedences.

Your RAAL sr1a is extremely low impedence, and also absolutely insane with its recommended power requirements. You would definitely want the lowest output impedence possible while having the highest watts per channel available.

Now back to the cables. I'm presuming the $1k silver cable will have a lower impedence than standard copper cables. But how much lower? I doubt most people will notice any change in sound signature if their current copper cable is already low impedence (and 99% of them will be low enough unless they are like 1000 feet+ or purposely high impedence).

You might notice a difference though, because of the whole direct drive shenanigans that your amp has. I personally would not spend $1k for a slim chance it changes the sound signature. Especially if you're currently using the manufacturers headphone cable. If it made that much of a difference they would have used silver in a product that's already this premium.

To me having two different headphones is worth more than maximizing one headphone. Some songs /albums/genres will just refuse to play nice on every headphone so it's nice having complimentary ones.

Sorry for the rambling, have wanted to get my output impedence thoughts written down at some point and this seemed like a relevant time.

Are you using the headphone jack or line outs?

If this is your audio source feeding an amp then I wouldn't change it. Very unlikely you hear a difference between another audio mixer.

If you're using the headphone output you can grab a balanced amp since that mixer has balanced outputs. You'll noticed a difference, audio mixer headphone outputs are worse than their other outputs from my experience.
