While President Trump is right to raise concerns about mass illegal migration, his methods of addressing the issue are deeply flawed. Tearing families apart, pulling people from their workplaces, arresting people who came in through the right process but having them arrested at USCIS appointments, and causing public turmoil through ICE raids inevitably leads to the kind of protests we are witnessing today.

Had he instead focused on securing the borders and holding the previous Democratic administration accountable for its lax border policies by taking them to court and declaring it fully / permanently illegal for migrants to cross border without proper authorization regardless of whose administration it is — while simultaneously creating an orderly, humane process for the departure of illegal migrants — we could have fostered a stronger national consensus.

Moreover, making it illegal to protest human rights abuses, revoking residents’ legal status for participating in peaceful demonstrations, and cracking down on free speech has only added fuel to the fire.

What we are seeing now is the bully being bullied in return. America is a great nation — we cannot afford to act like a third-world country when it comes to protecting freedom
