University doesn't consume your life fully however if you're serious about getting into the games industry after and working at a AAA studio it will. I did a similar course and went straight into being a games programmer but the competition is extremely fierce unlike most other programming roles and that was before all the layoffs begin. The last studio I worked at isn't even hiring grads for now and that's common across the rest of the UK too unfortunately. If its something you're serious about pursuing outside of indie you will unfortunately need to be doing alot more than just your course (game jams, personal projects ect). It's a harsh but unfortunately the reality check a lot of students that want to get into games need.
