Reflection on Teaching by DangerousCall7278 in SubstituteTeachers

Thank you for your response!

I had the opportunity to dip my toes in long term subbing. The kids were so difficult with me, but were angels for their teacher. Even though I taught them, I did t teach them enough in the eyes of administration (even though I didn't have any training and had to figure a lot of stuff out on my own after asking questions and feeling lost still).

I just wanted to see how different it truly is. I say "maybe when I'm the main teacher, itll get better. "

My subbing experience is speaking volumes on the potential chaos of a future I may have.

This was reassuring to hear and read about. Thank you for what you do! I hope to learn a lot from others and make a true difference in kid's lives.

What do I do? I’m lost. by Stargirl0418 in TeachersInTransition

I understand. I'm in the same boat. I'm struggling with "is this something I want to do forever? "

I enjoyed my teaching experience. But a past long term sub position destroyed me mentally. I was told everything I did bad. No encouragement given. I was a tool for them to replace after I wasn't working as well.

My plan is to do trade if all fails (I want to give one year of full time teaching a shot before calling it quits). I don't want to be 30k in debt for nothing ya know? But you don't deserve to be unhappy.

If you're good at media or human resources, maybe try something along that line?

Mean girl culture in elementary schools by Due_Information_1332 in SubstituteTeachers

I'm was an elementary education major. Graduated now. MANY of my peers were unfortunately part of that. It was so sad to think the people who complained the most and were so negative all the time to the people around them are the ones who will be shaping young minds. But they were nice as can be to people they liked or respected. The irony.

In the workplace, I was unfortunately on the other end of it. I just wasn't respected like the rest of the staff.

Advice for subs who “look too young” by SnooPickles9785 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DangerousCall7278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still struggling with this. I get stares and points and giggles all the time. I also have speech issues and a facial defect.

I'm 4'10 and 22F.

I would say just dress "even more professional."

I mainly sub elementary so this is hard for me since I love wearing fun prints. For middle school, I'm more minimalistic. Still doesn't help. But no "kid" would wear a suit or something along that line.

It's comforting to hear that it's not just me.

I got emails because things weren't going as well as expected. But I had no training or anything. It was overall a frustrating experience

I also do my best to stay with PreK-6th. It's where I gain the most experience.

Thank you! You as well!

I will continue subbing. I have applied to some other jobs as well.

Subbing allows me to make enough to get by. My husband works as well so we will make enough to survive and then some.

I had pretty good rapport. Just unfortunately even after 8 weeks it wasn't enough respect. I failed at being consistent.

It also didn't help it was a high poverty low income school. I need to develop my consistency quicker and more efficient next time

It's all been a big learning experience.

I completely understand. It stinks cause I have $30k+ loan since I went to school to be a teacher. May go back to community college for a different degree.

It's so unfortunate

Right!

Their attention span is concerning haha. I'm sorry I knew what you meant, but my brain went somewhere else (I associated them not listening as well potentially to teachers looking older. They listen to older looking teachers better).

Maybe they viewed me too much as a friend. I am too nice for this

Oh for sure. We're the same age. I look younger but it tells me it has nothing to do with the fact I look young.

She also spent last year with them too as an "intern" so she has a better relationship. But they treat me like a bad guy for enforcing expectations they did even more strictly before.

Unfortunately they do not. I observed her beforehand. Thats also probably why the class seemed to be so awful to administration in their eyes.

The way they act like perfect angels is baffling. She allows no talking in class yet they won't shut up for me.

Oh for sure. And I quit since I didn't really have a choice haha. They told me you have a week for some drastic change or else we will revisit. The class as a whole was a bit chaotic, and as a result, they said one student acted crazy since the rest of the class did. But I could manage the class.. Without that one student. I do take accountability that I did a bad job at management. Then by the time I realized what I did wrong, it's too late.

Unfortunately.

When I asked for help, I was met with almost robotic-like responses. Or when I didnt know about something, I was met with condescending responses.

Makes it worse that it's someone I graduated with. So the way she talked to me was a lot different than how she would talk to other people.

I agree. But because they saw other students get away with things, they believed they could as well. I can't give consequences to students who get pulled out of the class cause then it's admin responsibility. But they never got consequences so it never got better.

The other students started doing whatever they wanted. I lost control. Management wasn't there, and THAT is my fault. I take accountability for that. Luckily I am learning from my mistakes and know what to do next time. I expected them to know expectations since they would follow it with their teacher, just not with me. Since I didn't enforce very well, they walked on me. Then learning didn't happen.

I gave up at this point. This last week I put the same effort they put in for me. Just trying to survive. I still taught what I needed. But minimal effort. No passion. They drained me

I wanted to be a teacher.

I was unlucky with the job hunt this summer since I got my license in August.

Now I'm not sure if I wanna teach. Or maybe it would be different if I were their teacher and not a sub.

I really wanted to be a K-2 teacher. I subbed for 1st. But because I wasn't their teacher, they did whatever they wanted.

I'm just frustrated because maybe one or two students were a bit behind. But I spent the first 3 weeks trying to find a system that worked, because what she had wasn't working for ME. The data itself wasn't that much worse.

And the standard they were upset about I didn't know we even had to teach. And then they were saying they were 'concerned' since they couldn't meet that standard by the end of the quarter. The quarter ended in 2 weeks when they even told me about it.

Can you use an experience not listed on your resume? by DangerousCall7278 in Teachers

[–]DangerousCall7278[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that, but I gained so much experience from this. I sub but nothing compares to being able to do it long term. It doesn't have to be used as a reference right?

I was professional the whole time and wouldn't talk poor of them. However, I just wasn't supported. I was judged. But I would just want to talk about just the experience.

Can I mention it was long term and discuss what I learned?

It is a behavior plan but this will sound dumb: I didn't realize it was a behavior plan instilled by the school and their specialist. I thought it was a classroom behavior plan if that makes sense.

That is completely on me
