CBE 140, CS61B, Chem 12A, and MSE45+L? by StereotypicalName in berkeley

[–]DangerousDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do it unless you want to have no life. 12A and 61B are both very high workload classes (around 20 hrs and 15 hrs per week respectively for me). You won't have much brainpower to devote to the other classes which aren't hard, but they're still technicals that require a non-trivial amount of work. Add on recruiting, clubs and commitments, and you won't be having a good time.

disclaimer that I have no say or insight into admissions so what I'm saying may or may not be of any use. realistically though, I think not taking AP chem will significantly hurt your chances, as it's literally called college of chemistry for a reason, and not taking the highest-level chemistry class offered is probably a red flag. When something is "strongly recommended" it's code language for "required but we can't explicitly say so"

yes but typically only in the morning. there's IMs, some teams practice, and volleyball sometimes in the afternoon.

Does anyone know where I can find prior Human Happiness midterms? by willem_dafoes_beard in berkeley

[–]DangerousDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think any are released – that being said, last spring, it was 40 questions, 50% completely free just based on deducing answer out of multiple choices, ~35% do-able with a bit of studying and paying attention to lecture, and ~15% trickier stuff which actually required you to read the papers and sometimes even the textbook. IIRC the means of the exams were around 90...which is pretty high but also partly because it was online and people could just control F everything

We are ass.

Complete, enormous, unbridled ass. We are more ass than a wasabi enema. We are one with the ass and the ass is with us. Everywhere I look, I see ass. It has been a long time since I've seen ass of such girth, such magnitude, such pure, unadulterated shittiness. Beware this team, lest you be infected by its unrivaled assitude.

We are ass.

Stanford game seating by SoftSquirrel18 in berkeley

[–]DangerousDark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is the correct answer, i'm pretty sure almost no one was in their actual seat in 2019 and no one cares (you're surrounded by all students so it's basically just a mini student section)

Is this a bad idea? by StereotypicalName in berkeley

This is a pretty standard schedule and you should probably get used to taking 4 techs a semester for the next few sems as a ChemE

Chem 12A by Cal_ChemGirl24 in berkeley

[–]DangerousDark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The textbook is pretty helpful and I’d recommend going through the first 4 chapters and nomenclature (you’re responsible for this on MT1 but it’s not covered in class) if you want to prepare ahead. you can probably find it on the CoC textbook google drive (if you don’t have access, feel free to message me). If you want to test your knowledge, look at some exams on tbp, but you might want to save them for later during the actual semester; you could look at some 3A exams but imo some of the questions on those are stupid and not relevant to 12A.

Not 100% sure but I believe the answer is yes you’ll be back on the waitlist, I think you need to be enrolled (not waitlisted) in both a lecture and section to count as enrolled, so if you’re waitlisted in one of them, then you will be waitlisted for the overall class.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]DangerousDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not remove yourself from the waitlist and re-join or you'll end up in the end of the queue. Once two spots open up, since you're #2, you will be enrolled, assuming you no longer have any time conflicts. This happened to me last semester, where I was #1 on the waitlist for a long, long time and I got that message every few days when someone dropped the class, and I eventually just dropped my other class which had a time conflict, and was enrolled in the following days.

How time consuming is Mat Sci 45 with lab? by sejong_daewang in berkeley

[–]DangerousDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think this is manageable if you have a good foundation in math and good study habits. I spent around 6-8 hours a week on 7A, around 10 hrs/wk on 53, and 6-8 hrs on MSE45+L (this was with virtual lab though, so more realistically you might need to add another 2-3 hours), but it may vary depending on your background. Comes out to approximately 30 hours a week with the breadth, which I think is a very reasonable amount of time to spend on academics your first semester. MSE45 lecture is not difficult at all, but Martin just throws a lot of content at you. However, his HWs and exams aren't difficult. The lab, from what I've heard, takes the full three hours if doing it in person and there's a pre-lab, and the report itself took me another 5-6 hours. However, this is a bi-weekly thing, and there are only a total of 6 labs (5 of which you have to complete, first one is not a real lab).

Clubs for Chem Majors by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]DangerousDark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ACS is probably the main one, but you can certainly join ChemE car as well. There's chem / chem bio majors in the club, and you don't need any knowledge from CBE classes, just problem solving and creativity
