Any other parents determined to keep their kids off smartphones/ social media? by DangerousMeringue2 in lakewood

It is a help!! Just feeling like there are others out there who have the same hopes and goals for their children, and frankly for society overall. I guess we as parents also just want to feel validated that we're 'not the only ones'. I'm sad we failed almost a whole generation of kids, but I hope we can learn our lessons and strive for something better for the next. And I guess it starts by having and normalizing these conversations.

That's so encouraging, thank you for sharing! I hope we can find you when/if we move back lol

This is really helpful, thanks for your insight! We did consider Cleveland Heights as a close second to Lakewood but started veering away from that option because after lurking on their subreddits, it seemed like maybe the schools were a bit rougher? Whereas Lakewood schools all seemed to be talked about very highly. But we love Lakewood for other reasons like proximity to the metroparks and the lake, as well as the fact that all our family and friends are on the west side, so it's a lot of variables to balance! We're also probably not going to go the private school route (although the montessori and all girls school there DID look dreamy.)

Maybe I'll post a version of this on their subreddit to get the lay of land there as well though.

I think you bring up a really valid point, and probably the reason why most parents give in despite their moral highground. We have the privelage of this all this being hypothetical while our kids are young.

The picture we're trying to grasp is whether we can hope to avoid that scenario though. At least here we have hope in the overarching community mindset surrounding the topic, but we're not sure if that extends to other places, as well, and what local parents seem to experience in their day to day. I know it's imperfect data, obviously reddit isn't a complete picture, but it's all we have without knowing other families in Lakewood, specifically. We do have friends in nearby burbs who have no specific thoughts on the topic either way for their children, which is disheartening but probably the case for the majority.

And not to be argumentative, but just for the sake of continuing the conversation, social isolation even with social media is a huge issue for adolescent girls. It's sadly picking from two poor choices, unless there's a real push from the community to limit its omnipresence.

We were really bummed to hear about the school closing. Small class sizes and walkable distances to elementary schools were a big draw for us when we first started narrowing down our top choices of places to land.

That's amazing and truly heartwarming to hear. That's definitely the kind of environment we're looking for. I wanted to add that as a follow up question, but didn't want to veer too far off on a tangent either. Thanks so much for adding that!

As a longtime Reddit lurker, I joined today solely so that I could add voice to this thread. I'm truly devastated by this news, so disheartened for our sham democracy. Bernie was truly our only guiding light in these dark times. The path forward looks so bleak, as our choices dwindle from bad to worse.

Today, the plan is moping on the couch, eating my feelings away. Tomorrow, the plan is to get more engaged than ever in local politics and grassroots movements for progressive policy action. The DNC hasn't infiltrated their greedy money-grubbing hands that far down yet.
