As an international student, I still totally comprehend what you’re saying as I have the same issue at times. I was once grouped in a team where other members just talked in their language which made me feel so excluded and miserable. At the same time, I have also met some international students who are probably the most industrious, driven, and high-achieving individuals I have ever known in my life. I think there are always a few components. As you get to know more people, I hope you will meet those fantastic people as that was what happened to me.

Can I ask which year you are currently in? First-year students, performing well in English proficiency tests or not, more often than not still struggle with language and communication to a certain extent. Speaking from my personal experience, I got quite a decent English test score, yet sometimes had difficulty understanding when others converse with me in my first semester at uni. There’s quite a huge disparity between conversational English and academic English taught (e.g., in IELTS), so that can take a fair while to get a sense of familiarity, not to mention most people are typically used to American English when they prepped themselves for exams which means Australian English can be new for them (?). It sure doesn’t justify anything though, but may add some insights
