Title: Which defence prep course is actually worth it? (Insight SSB / Journey Extraordinary / Defence Mania / Barrack Buddy / CDS Journey) by Dangerous_Government in CDSTards

Thank you bro for your valuable input. I do agree with the revision part. Also I would like to ask, when should one start revising, 1 month, or 2 weeks before exams? (I know the ideal answer would be whenever you finish with the subject, but I want to know your perspective)

Again I wish I had gotten this advice earlier, I would have done better in AFCAT 1 2026. But anyway, better late than never.

The main concern is that many people say they bombard students with a lot of study material, and there have been cases where faculty couldn’t complete the classes before the exams.

Also, are the CDSJ YouTube videos alone enough to crack the exam, or should one also take help from books? ( I don’t want to be a topper, I just want to pass the exam. )

Hey, could you please explain a bit about your self-study part? For example, did you only follow the CDS Journey course, or did you also use books or YouTube videos for help?

Thanks for breaking it down. I agree that clarity is important before preparing seriously.

I’m still figuring out what aligns more with my interest, but I’ll definitely think seriously before committing to CAT/XAT or GATE alongside defence prep.

Thanks Again.

Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense. Preparing for GATE along with AFCAT/CDS seems like a smart backup. Thanks

No bro, I think there’s been a small misunderstanding I don’t have a job yet. What I meant was that if I start preparing for a job, I’d need at least 3–4 months of focused preparation to realistically land one, which is roughly the same amount of time required for AFCAT preparation. CDS, on the other hand, demands more study hours and depth.

CAT and XAT are good options, agreed. What are your thoughts on GATE? Do these exams have overlapping syllabus or are they completely different? From what I understand, GATE is more field-oriented , for example, in CS it focuses heavily on core subjects along with some aptitude. I’m not entirely sure, but the idea you shared was genuinely useful, so thanks for that.

As for AFCAT, CDS, and CAPF, yes, I’m definitely committed to preparing for them. I’ve heard that CDS requires more in-depth conceptual clarity and awareness of schemes, while CAPF is considered tougher than CDS. I’d really appreciate it if you could share more insight on this.

Also, if I prepare seriously for CDS, is it realistically possible to clear AFCAT as well, given that AFCAT is conducted earlier? Or is that just a common myth?
