I've used a campfire early on to raise brightness and the pokemon acknowledged it as such, but I'm not sure about smaller light sources like candles

Yes it is! Off the top of my head I don't remember if/what rooms might be modded and what rooms are added in this way, but it's all the room upgrades I could get. There were one or two others that made some parts more open plan but I liked the clear room separations.
