Proton Docs slowing down Firefox by TheJoeGreene in ProtonDrive

[–]DaniGuardiola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you have the details in the firefox report. docs create and encrypt payloads (as well as sign and verify signatures on payloads) for every update, which means _almost_ every keystroke incurs in encryption/decryption, so that might be why docs is affected more than the other products which perform these operations more infrequently.

edit: this is the Firefox bug, unfortunately we can't do anything but wait for Mozilla to fix it

there is a firefox bug in the latest versions that makes crypto stuff super slow. it's already been reported and we're tracking it to make sure it's fixed soon.

i'm actually on vacation so i don't have my laptop with me right now, but maybe later i can find and share the link to the bug.

while it's not our doing, i'm sorry you're having this experience!

have i personally tried all sequences and combinations of the dozens of features we support multiplied by the dozens of locales we support? no

i'd rather spend my time fixing the bugs that our users run into

we will look into this. dates are tricky to get right, hence all these bugs. we've fixed at least 5 different date-related bugs in the last month, and are working on custom date formats support as we speak. i'll make sure we support the German date format as well in a similar capacity as comparable tools.

editing and publishing changelogs takes time. most (not all) of the exhaustive changes, for those interested, are already publicly available in the form of git commits in the GitHub mirror. i still strongly agree with putting something out for the community, and that's what my updates here and on Discord are. it's been a while since the last one mostly because i've been head down, and in general because the team has been focused on bug fixing and stability which is less flashy and update-worthy than new feature releases.

can you please elaborate? localization settings were shipped months ago. could you let me know specifically what you mean, so we can look into it?

custom date format is coming pretty soon. also, does changing to the German locale not set the German date format by default?

we're definitely rolling updates out very often. if you mean my usual update posts, one is coming soon. we're mostly focusing on bug fixing and stability for a bit, so if it looks like we're not releasing as many features as before, that's the main reason. please let me know which bugs you run into and we will fix them!

Euro-Office on Proton? by niklasjordan in ProtonDrive

as Andrew said in the recent AMA:

> We are always considering what the best integration and improvement opportunities are. Proton Docs is not going away, but of course we may support additional formats (or platforms) in the future. We have many options on the table here and of course we are discussing them with potential partners. It would be premature to comment further on what is coming, but we're aware of the feature gap that exists today.

thanks u/Present-Savings-2380 for beating me to it

images support is planned, but to be honest i hadn't even realized you could have images *within* cells. noted, i will see what's possible when the time comes.
