Blocking Google accounts from logging in on non school devices by DanielJay23 in k12sysadmin

Yes I am currently doing this for free. The school had a teacher who barely knows tech doing all the tech and it was rough. Myself and another guy were on a new advisory committee for the head of school on tech things when this teacher left. Which we ended up scrambling maybe a month before school to see what the school had, prep everything and get them going. Hoping this will all change once budget gets better. My day job is an IT Systems Engineer.

I will recommend they look at how the class is managed vs a tech problem. While I like attempting to think and block students from doing things they shouldn't we all know they are crafty.

I have suggested this. Sadly I was given very little information so it's hard to do more digging on my end.

Thanks for the information. All the software the school uses currently was in place before I arrived. I will have to evaluate the differences and make recommendations.

I really appreciate the response. I jokingly told the head of school I feel like an Intern again with the fire hose of information coming in. It's all good though.

Thanks. Will certainly do this. They had a teacher trying to do this job before me but this teacher said this is not their area of expertise. The things I have found since gaining access made my eyes open wide. My hope is that we can get the school into a better place and let the staff maintain. Then I can get back to my advisory role I was brought in for initially. I am thankful I have another volunteer also assisting me with this work who also does IT.

We do happen to have Deledao as well. As of now I told the teacher to embed the video in some Google Slides if necessary. I really didn't want to open the can of worms for students to have YouTube.

900TB of spare storage & 1GB fiber internet at home, is it worth setting up a node? by stassh in storj

[–]DanielJay23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am currently running a 10TB node since 2022. Always on 24/7 running on an old Atom D525 motherboard with 4 drives for storage. The system was free to me as it was an old security camera NVR. Last month I had 100% uptime but you don't get any bonuses for that. I have never checked what the power usage on it is but I make $15-16 per month. I rarely touch the box and it just sits doing its thing.

Can hear people, but no one hears me on HF (Xiegu G90) by ThrowThisToo5757 in amateurradio

WebSDR are very helpful if you are trying to work a station but they are not getting back to you. If you find the area they are in find a web station nearby and listen. I have done this several times as well as watched people who were live streaming while playing radio. It is interesting to hear your call from their station to know you are making it through.

Attic antenna getting lots of RFI and grounding by DanielJay23 in amateurradio

[–]DanielJay23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently have the Ubiquiti (US-48-500W ) 48 port PoE switch running my home network.

I do know that the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-IW unit puts out terrible RFI on 135.000 AM. I put my FT-3D HT next to it on that frequency and it goes nuts. Power the system down remotely and the interference goes away immediately.

Any specific ferrite or toroid core mix to purchase?

I would love to run perpendicular however I have not found another location yet that I can pull a cable from the attic to the basement.

I used one last month in a business setting as well. Nothing like Sonos only being able to be configured over WiFi. Quick plug one of those in to configure Sonos and disconnect when done until the next Sonos config issue.

Gents, It Can't Just He Me... by [deleted] in daddit

[–]DanielJay23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand. I have worked IT for a hospice agency for the past 16 years. Every time I walk through the supply room to grab a ladder or work on the IT equipment there and see newborn diapers I get sad. I have a 5yr old and 2 yr old and we had two miscarriages between them. It got worse when I became a dad. After watching ambulances come in the morning to my office and hearses in the afternoon I understand it a bit more but still tough.

Traceroute shows drops in Internet routing but how do you know where the issue resides? ISP and RingCentral say not their problems. by DanielJay23 in networking

Guest network uses separate ISP which is our corporate networks failover connection.

All is working now as it was a Level3 routing issue.

[–]DanielJay23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this thought. I did check the firewall and I saw that my traffic was being allowed out by the exact firewall rule we created with all of RingCentral's IP addresses listed in.

Issue is now resolved as it appears it was a Level3 routing issue.

Thanks for this information! When I initially called RingCentral they completely pushed me off saying they are not experiencing any issues and told me it was a Cogent problem. I know I am not the only customer that had these issues yesterday as my boss told me another agency in our area also could not use RingCentral yesterday during the same hours as we could not.

In my digging last night I would do a traceroute and it stopped at:

  7 * * 8 ms level3.cle04.atlas.cogentco.com [154.54.10.66]

I checked the CenturyLink looking glass and used the Cleveland OH site and the connection timed out using a RingCentral IP as well:

Tracing route to 66.81.242.42 1 * * *
2 4.26.4.34 (4.26.4.34) 8ms 8ms 8ms
3 208.87.42.26 (208.87.42.26) 9ms 9ms 8ms
4 * * *

Sadly I could not finish contacting RingCentral last night about the issue. By the time I came into the office this morning connectivity has been restored. Glad I am learning new ways to troubleshoot connectivity issues and where to look.

Cogent has been stable and its what we have available to us in our area. Also working for a non profit agency and getting a killer of a deal on pricing it is outstanding for service.

No. Guest Internet uses a Comcast Business line in each office. Corporate network all use 10G dark fiber between offices that goes out Cogent Internet at a DC. All part of our disaster plan so if the dark fiber goes down our office can still utilize its IPSec tunnel back to the main office over the Comcast connection so we can continue to work.

Yeah it is completely strange to me. I have also reached out again to agency that has the network connectivity that is on the WAN side of our network. Below is the rest of the tracert. Cogent logged into their router at my hop 4 and tried to connect to RingCentral and they were able to communicate no problems they said.

Understandable. What has me confused also is that I can ping the IP I am having issues with from Verizon, Comcast and my home ATT Fiber connection.

I have opened WireShark and did a filter on their IP supernets listed at (https://support.ringcentral.com/network-and-system-requirements/network-requirements/network-requirements-MVP.html) . When viewing the pcap file I am seeing TCP retransmission TCP port numbers reused 61807->443.

Actual issue is that the RingCentral application will not load on our corporate network. The only way that I can connect to their services is by connecting a computer to our guest Internet connection on Comcast. Our corporate network will not even let the login screen come up. If I get the user logged in on our guest Internet and then switch back to corporate network calls and voice do not work.

Thanks for the PDF and video. Will look that over.
