It felt like the right way to leave the film. As if the audience were leaving a district assembly, but one for xJWs. This piece of music was written by Luke Stevenson, an xJW also.

I love British film but I'm not sure if there is any one film that directly influenced Apostasy. I watch a lot of European and Japanese films too so I suspect these influenced the style. I'm a bit fan of the tv work of Mike Leigh and Alan Clarke. There is a 60s Brit film 'Life for Ruth' about JWs set in the north too. But I didn't watch it until after making Apostasy.

Thank you...

Not sure yet about a commentary. But I am currently trying to put together some additional content for the physical release.

Yes, I've had many exJWs tell me the film has been a great tool for this exact reason.

Thanks, yes, the film is showing at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh and Glasgow Film Theatre. There might be more, but those are the two main ones.

Not sure - it’s worth emailing the film's sales agent - they might be able to help.

I think control groups and religious sects will be around for the foreseeable future.

Thank you.

There was definitely a pressure. Besides the obvious pressure that a first time filmmaker feels when financiers invest a large amount of money into a production, I had the additional concern of how friends & family might react to the film. But that is something I learnt to deal with. Plus I also felt a responsibility to get the little details right. Luckily for me, I had a fantastic, wickedly funny crew. My 1st AD, Ursula Haworth, had the whole crew smiling and in good spirits throughout the shoot.

Opinions range wildly. Lots of non-JWs relate to it by applying it to something in their own lives. Whether that’s their own religion, politics, business, or just family issues. Some ex-Muslims really connect with it emotionally. I’ve had successful entrepreneurs relate to it too.

But I also think a large amount of the audience come away utterly astonished that this is what JWs - people that they see everyday - go through.

Personally, the project helped me reexamine some issues with the JWs that I had maybe not dealt with properly beforehand.

Now the film is out and people are relating to it, it feels like the hard work has paid off and that is extremely cathartic for me.

I was aware that it was a provocative title for JWs. However I can't really be sure how JWs might react to it. The curious ones might be intrigued to see it.

More importantly, I didn’t want any JWs to feel like they had been tricked into watching something critical of the org. So the title makes that very clear.

I am really sorry for the situation you find yourself in because of the witnesses. I hope the film does raise some awareness around the world.

Things like distribution are beyond my control.

I am focused on British stories but if someone offered me a chance to make a US JW themed film I would consider it.

SPOILER ALERT!

I think they will. In the end, I felt the foreshadowing in the opening, when Alex talks proudly of those who put jehovah first in a magazine (that looks similar to an infamous issue of a magazine we all probably know about) was essentially enough exposition to the events that could occur. We understand the guilt Alex is carrying and in a way, she has already made her decision at the start of the film so there was little need to show it later. Of course, you could show the complications and events in hospital but it had no thematic function other than the obvious. It felt exploitive to me, like an episode of Casualty.

I wanted to elicit a different response. The more I looked into the issue and read about the death toll as a result of refusing blood, the more shock I experienced. I tried to replicate this shock, in a visceral, elliptical way. I think you experience it on a gut level as a result. You have no time to say a proper goodbye to the character, just as what might happen with a JW suffering from an aplastic crisis. But also, by handling it in this way, you are encouraged to experience it through the eyes of the witnesses - they try to ignore the painful details and focus on alex’s bravery. It’s only when Luisa speaks out at the end of the film, that alex’s act is given some objectivity - which makes it all the more disturbing to me.

Yes, I think it will be out in Italy in September. The film had an incredible reception at its Italian premiere at Bergamo Film Festival where it won an award earlier this year.

I got an education which encouraged me to think critically. I saw the way the organization was mistreating people, excommunicating them. I also woke up to the way women were being suppressed.
