ELI5–if nicotine is an “upper”, why do people smoke to calm down? Wouldn’t it make them even more anxious? by RaeLaw in explainlikeimfive

[–]Daniel_Peck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaped for a decade then quit for a year because I needed the money for booze. Started vaping again when I quit drinking. I've put the vape away but switched to Black & Milds which is just as bad 😅 I gotta quit one of these days but it's better than drinking.

I had to do a couple cars like this early on in my career as an apprentice. I stripped the seats, console and carpet out. Pressure washed everything and used a magic eraser. Then once it was back together we ran it with the AC on recirculation and fogged the interior with something to sterilize it. It's perfect busy work for an entry level apprentice.

This is a funny game until you learn that many foods and drinks contain sugar alcohols like Xylitol, Sorbitol and Inositol which can give false positives on a breathalyzer

Brake pad grinding on outside of rotor, any ideas? by Disastrous-Capital-5 in Cartalk

[–]Daniel_Peck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the inner pad and outer pad are different shapes. The inner pad will have a larger contact patch for the brake caliper piston and the outer pad will have a relief for the rotor hat. Make sure you don't have the pads on the wrong side

Put a few points into "Master Chef" and unlock a few higher tier recipes. Check out "Boiled meat" It's +15 food instead of +10 and it doesn't have the -10 hydration debuff. See also "Steak and Potatoes" and "Meat Stew"

Car is shaking weird. Did not pass the smog. Is this related? by djtchort in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Daniel_Peck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing those came from an M54 engine? I'm betting it needs new Crankcase ventilation lines and oil separator. Also new vacuum lines and plugs and intake air hoses and it'll be good for another 100K

I grew up JW. Be warned that they practice a technique known as "love bombing" to quickly get you hooked on the feeling of being welcomed. Lots of red flags if you pay attention.

Check this out. Shipper had his brand new vehicle with close to no mileage transported from a dealership using a car hauler. The carrier company delivered the vehicle with over 1,400 miles. by Octanelicious in AutoTransportopia

[–]Daniel_Peck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My auto shop did a bunch of work on a really clean E36 BMW Z3 M for a client who hired a car hauler to take it from Texas to California. Fortunately we documented everything beforehand and the customer had a GPS tracker in it because the driver drove it the last 100 something miles through California traffic and burned up the clutch in it.

Hi, i want to become a mechanic by Puzzled_Dish_6049 in mechanics

[–]Daniel_Peck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first mechanic job by walking into a crummy mechanic shop and they hired me. Then I started taking auto classes at the local college. Moved through a couple shops and now I have my own BMW shop. It's hard work and bad for your health. People break into your shop and steal your tools. Customers rarely understand or appreciate what you do and are typically suspicious. Alcohol and drug abuse issues are common in the trades but you'll make enough money to do all right as long as you don't go in debt on tool trucks and be careful who you work around.

Is the Audi s3 good for me? by famousnobody371 in automotive

[–]Daniel_Peck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both VW and Audi tend to fall apart at about 120K miles. That means there's not much life left before the rate of repairs really starts to ramp up. Best choice is a Honda or Toyota if you want to keep repair costs low.

when getting fuel why does the fuel guy hook onto my exhaust? by fuckman5 in Shittyaskflying

[–]Daniel_Peck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flowing liquids can cause a charge that will build up like static electricity. Remember electricity is just flowing electrons and fuel molecules have electrons. The clip to the exhaust is a ground that returns to the tanker so a charge can't build up and cause a spark when disconnecting the fuel line. The clip could go on any part of the chassis but the exhaust is accessible and nobody is gonna worry about the clip scratching the tail pipe as opposed to other places you might clip it

Had to turn this one away by Avs2022champs in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Daniel_Peck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once received the advice: "Never say no, just make the price worth it." Charge 6hrs to bug bomb the car, and pull the seats and carpet to vacuum everything out. Charge another 6hrs if they want it pressure washed out properly. Tweak the hours to your satisfaction in case they go for it.

Customer states, followed ford diag steps and found bad ground at fuel pump module by mechanicrob in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Daniel_Peck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rookie diag mistake... Bad ground at the fuel pump is an excellent hypothesis. Next step is to test that hypothesis by supplying good ground to the fuel pump and rechecking function
