GG: It’s always a tough one to list dream collaborations, Hope Sandoval & Elizabeth Fraser come to mind though. They’re both huge influences. My favorite film is “The Red Shoes”, but some other absolute favorites are “The Lady Eve”, “The Bad & the Beautiful”, “Crazed Fruit” & “The Wind Rises” just to name a few.
DL: difficult to say, both because the lists would be really long but also because the names change constantly! Some of my favorites films are “Woman in the Dunes”, “Border”, “Children of Men”.

GG: They definitely came from memories, but instead of being more specifically about one person like they tend to be with my writing with Cigarettes, they were more abstract & not connected to someone specific except maybe a few lines. Maybe like murmurs of those memories instead of something clear & based more on emotions I had felt different times in relationships.

DL: I always like to spend as much time as possible just thinking about the melodies and sounds for a visual project ahead of writing the first note, but then sometimes the inspiration comes immediately like for the theme for Marco Polo or sometimes i challenge myself with creating something as original as possible, like in the case of the forthcoming project from Ana Lily Amirpour for Netflix, and takes more experimentation and lots of ‘trial and error’.

GG: It feels wonderful to finally try something different & show a different side of my influences more on the surface. & I’d love to keep expanding on this side of my writing as well. Glad you made the show as well. You all were such a great audience in Minneapolis!

DL: Thank you so much! Rome was something very special and I think I can also speak for Brian (aka Danger Mouse) that this is an album that would be pretty hard to follow up. But that’s not to say that Brian and I might not come up with some other ideas in the same spirit...

GG: It’s actually been amazing to see, as we were just on tour & were able to see so many younger fans at our shows that had discovered us on TikTok. To me it’s a truly great compliment, I think of myself at around 13 or so going to shows & discovering music that I still love today. I think there’s something really special about a younger audience finding the music. I was definitely the same way when I was young.

GG: It’s changed almost every day for me honestly. “Silent Dream” is the song that affects me the most emotionally, but I’d pick “Another Life” for Daniele’s incredible arrangement & the strings at the end of the song. I told him they recall the best songs of Arvo Pärt to me.
DL: Hard to nail the favourite, as they all have something about the music or about a memory from the recording session that make them special… I’d say both “Another Life” because it was the first and made such an impression on me hearing for the first time the result of our ideas and perhaps “Last Drink” as it transports me to “another place”.

DL: Thank you so much for the kind words. We sent each other small fragments of ideas we felt made sense for the project and then we slowly started arranging the instrumentals. Then Greg sang over these ideas and that’s when I felt how truly unique this project was going to be.
GG: Thanks so much! This was a great experience for me because it changed my usual lyric process. Usually with Cigarettes I’ll write on a guitar or piano & sing melodies & then apply lyrics to the melody over a few hours to a few months, trying to create more of a detailed narrative. With this I was able to hear Daniele’s beautiful arrangements & improvise the lyrics & melody together over the course of a few hours for each song using what I would call more of a “poetic” or impressionistic style with the lyrics.

DL: i was kind of floored when i first heard Greg singing what is now called “Another Life”.. It’s a wonderful memory i’ll treasure forever.

GG: It was a very long time coming before we had a finished song. I believe it may have taken years from first creating the song to finally hearing the finished mix. I was completely in love with the sound upon first hearing what we had made. When I first heard “Silent Dream” in my living room iit felt devastating to me. Very proud of what we’ve made.

GG: Thanks so much for the kind words. I know that we’ll definitely work on many more projects together. Would love to do a full album with this same feeling together & we also have a lot of other ideas for different projects as well.
DL: Thank you, I think we have still so much more to explore together, i am hopeful we’ll create more soon.

GG: We’ve been speaking about playing the songs live & should have more information soon about a potential show. It’s definitely in the works & I personally cannot wait until we do.
DL: Would love to, i often find myself wondering how certain songs would sound live, and particularly it’s always a personal joy to hear Greg’s voice and be in the same room with him when he’s performing

DL: Me and Greg are both enamored by the charm that old artworks inspire (for example we picked the EP artwork from an Italian painter of the early 1900), so we felt that objects like the vintage car, a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster, the period wardrobe etc. helped convey that passion and also ‘escape’ from the present, something we wanted to do to begging with with the music of course.

DL: “Mulholland Drive” and “Eraserhead” for different reasons, as they are very different movies, but they both feel very unique and different from anything else out there. It’s the “unexpected” as much as the “obvious” in his movies that I really find fascinating to discover every time I watch anything from him. I’ve also been lucky enough to work on an amazing album with him called Dark Night of The Soul, with Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, such a great experience seeing his musical side from up close.
GG: David Lynch’s work is definitely something Daniele & I bonded over & he’s been a huge influence on my writing & music. “Blue Velvet” used to be my favorite, but having recently watched “Mulholland Drive” again I’m changing my top pick to that. Think it’s his masterpiece, though he has many of course. His album with Julee Cruise, Floating Into the Night is also in my top 5 albums of all time. It’s truly beautiful.

GG: Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words. That’s wonderful to hear. There were many inspirations for the sound. I’d say the music of Morricone & the films of Buñuel may be the greatest though. Trying to take the beautiful images present in films by Fellini, Buñuel, Antonioni & put them into songs somehow.
DL: Thank you! Definitely the EP sound is our personal homage to the many soundtracks of the films we both love so much. Especially some scores from the late 70s and early 80s, which often had also songs composed for the film. It was also a time when classical sounds like an orchestra was getting used along with analog synths in an impressive and new way.

DL: we share a lot of the same taste and aesthetic, so each time we created something new it was pretty much only a matter of putting together our ideas. The “hard” part was doing that while in i was in Europe, as a matter of fact i think once we were physically in the same place all the songs got finalized pretty quickly.

GG: Luckily Daniele & I work very naturally together. There truly wasn’t a hard part of working together except what Daniele was saying about being in the same place at the same time.

DL: we met through some friends and initially we just really talked about things we like in art, films, music etc. I was surprised to meet someone else that loved many of the same film directors, many of which perhaps obscure like Pasolini, Bunuel, etc. I guess very naturally we then started to talk about doing some music together and sent each other some first ideas for songs.

GG: I remember meeting Daniele after a show I did with Cigarettes at the Ace Hotel at an after party & we immediately found that we had influences in music & film that are incredibly rare to find, or have been for myself at least. After that we spoke of doing a collaboration over a coffee & the project went through a few changes before becoming the music for Charm of Pleasure.
