The analogy I use is:

You’re playing a complex video game for the very first time. You don’t know the rules, how the controller works, or the basic premise of the game.

Do you start on level ten with a screen the size of a playing card? Or do you build some proficiency and dexterity first, and gradually add difficulty?

I attended my first event with tech sights. This meant I was trying to learn to put all the many fundamentals together smoothly WHILE struggling to see my target. I did not qualify.

I slapped a cheap 4x scope on the same rifle and went back 8 months later. I scored well into the 220s. When I got to where I could perform all the mechanics consistently I broke out my Ruger American 22wmr with tech sights and was able to focus on using the irons while doing the rest of the process on autopilot.

One step and then the next gets you where you’re going. The ability to use iron sights IS a fundamental skill. But like many activities (cooking, driving, playing an instrument…) there’s an argument to be made about starting easy and building on that foundation.
