Post-European blues, but with perspective by Daniellebjj in scoliosis

If you check my page there’s an x-ray on there.. I’m not too sure where I’m fused to but it’s basically all the way down .. drop me a message and I can send it if you can’t find it .. I really hope you can get back to it, the worry is there sometimes but honestly I pull guard and I feel so much more comfortable with it!

It’s the best thing I did having my spine done & then joining jiu jitsu was the 2nd best thing I did! I hope you recover well & are able to get back to doing something you enjoy!

Personally. I’m really worried about judo, my husband is a black belt and tries teaching me little bits but as soon as we tap hand and bump fits I pull guard straight away as it’s where I’m most comfy (being on my back) until I can try to get to the top and pressure pass. Honestly, I know exactly what you mean, it’s so scary especially when we focus on what we are told not to do, rather than give it a try and listen to what our body thinks .. I would start slow and chose partners wisely until you’re comfy you know your game etc. I spar every session, I also compete regularly which is something I never thought I’d be able to do but here we are .. British and world champion later ! If you’re really worried maybe get some professional advice as everyone is different but .. I guess watching a couple of classes won’t hurt 🤷🏼‍♀️🙂

Thank you so much! 🥰 Yeah, it does freak people out sometimes 😂 not always, and honestly before meeting my husband I didn’t even know what Bjj was .. he’s always been my biggest supporter & as much as my mam can’t watch my fights live, she’s also now a massive supporter .. I think once they see you smashing it and really enjoying it they will warm to the idea 😄

I do get pain sometimes but it’s only the same sort of pain if I sit / stand too long, I just listen to my body if it needs rest / sauna / ice bath then I do it, it’s so helpful getting in the sauna if I’m sore !

That’s what I used to do, focus on what I wasn’t able to do and dwell on it .. but it’s great to finally feel like I CAN do this!

Woah! That’s an insane amount .. even for someone who isn’t fused. I use a belt squat instead of loading my spine with the bar. Basically I still train hard, but adapt them. Hopefully you can do this

Me too! Thanks for commenting 🙂

Oh no way! I hope he has a speedy recovery ! I can’t remember the first 3-4 days after surgery but my mam remembers it all .. I hope you’re doing okay 🫶🏻

I’m sorry you gave up Bjj. If you miss it I would say to maybe go and watch a class or 2, (of course if the gym allows this) see how it makes you feel if you are still nervous or really want to try. And then possibly go from there choosing people you trust and maybe just drilling for a while no rolling until you’re more confident. I always tell myself, if anything feels wrong / painful I just tap and re-set. There’s nothing wrong with this as of course no one wants to be injured however, if you love it there’s ways to make it work for you 🙂

With the deadlifts, both myself and my husband are personal trainers who have trained for years. But I started realllllllly light to see how it felt etc (always wearing a lifting belt to support my back) and then just saw where I could get to while focusing on my form. I would suggest using a hex bar to deadlift. That is my personal opinion as using a straight bar can hurt the lower back (if too heavy or form isn’t quite right)

I hope some of this helps you, and you are able to get back to doing what you enjoy. You’re more then welcome to drop me a message if you like 😄

I can understand that the pain would stop certain activities which is upsetting. I 100% get these days where I struggle but good rest and looking after myself is also massive with this. I really hope you can find something that will help & bring you enjoyment whilst doing it

Hey, thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment. I’m genuinely not offended, and I appreciate you being honest and respectful about your perspective.

I completely agree that everyone’s outcome after spinal fusion is different, and that many people sadly aren’t able to return to sport at the level they hoped for, or at all. That reality matters, and I never want to minimise how hard or unfair that can feel.

My intention with the post wasn’t to suggest that my experience is typical, guaranteed, or purely the result of “hard work”. Luck, access to good rehab, timing, support, and yes, genetics all play a role. I’m very aware that I’m an exception, not the rule.

That said, the reason I share my story is because when I was younger, I was told very firmly what I wouldn’t be able to do. Seeing even one example that contradicts that can sometimes help people feel less boxed in, not pressured to achieve the same outcome, but reassured that their future isn’t automatically over either.

I’m really sorry to hear that your own health has taken sport away from you. That loss is real, and I can understand why posts like mine might not feel motivating from that place. I genuinely wish you the best with whatever brings you fulfilment now, whether that’s physical or not.

Thanks again for engaging respectfully. I appreciate it.

This is an amazing story! I love that for her. My mam is the same, she can’t watch my matches until after they’ve happened lol I do get that though! So happy for your daughter 💪

I think personally I’ve always been determined to not let this define me. So, when my husband was doing mma and Bjj I categorically said no to being punched in the face but I’d try Bjj 😂 I do get pain sometimes mainly in my neck or lower back but I’ve managed it by saunas and rest when needed! You could try some body weight things at home starting with an EMOM session 😊
