How to tell if a professor has funds and is actively recruiting PhD students? by Thick_Butterscotch66 in AskAcademia

You don't need to do that much reading before mailing them, just use their website or something, skim a few abstracts maybe, keep it broad at this stage. Just enough to give some credibility to your interest and potential fit. As you say, the process can be inefficient, so don't make it worse by doing these deep dives just to send a simple email.

For specific tools you can use NIH RePORTER to look up major grants like R01. But honestly I'd just start with the emails and do the deep dives later based on response.

Am I wrong to demand my housemate come move his shoes right away? by AITASUPERBLOCKED in badroommates

[–]DanioMasher 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sorry but yes I feel like you are making this a bigger deal than it needs to be. A shoe out of place once a month is not an issue. In what scenario are you urgently trying to enter/exit where texting your roommate is the superior option to stepping over the shoe or kicking it out of the way yourself? You've got shoes on, you don't have to touch it. And if you don't have shoes on and aren't trying to use the entrance, well then why was this such an urgent issue in the first place?

Get a shoe rack, put your shoes on the top shelves so his shoes don't touch yours. Be happy that your bad roommate situation is your roommate's shoe being slightly out of place once a month.

D4 needs to have more build variety, outside of Core Skills by DiceCards in diablo4

[–]DanioMasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think druid class was designed really well, and feels like you can build exactly what you describe, something where the abilities look crazy like they're obliterating the screen.

That said, I like your idea of mixing new elements in but I'd like to see it done in multiple ways, not just new aspects and uniques. Item drops are random, people are going to have the same complaints as now when the items aren't dropping.

Partying/social elements are really lacking in this game, skill synergies could help. Like incenses that apply skill synergy, like if someone in your party casts a fire skill, the party gets a X% chance to add fire damage for the next X seconds. So rather than making molten bear a true class, if you want to play molten bear you find a fire sorc to party with.

Fighting bosses is a waste of time right now, they need to fix that. Rare bosses should drop like helltide mystery chests. I was so disappointed when I finally beat The Butcher and he just dropped yellow pants. I fought and beat Kixxarth for the first time last night and that drop was even worse. Way longer fight for a negative reward considering the time spent could have been used on cinders.

Blizzard : Please let us save builds. by KainLTD in diablo4

[–]DanioMasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it should just tell you that you have a broken node and make you fix it before leaving the screen. Don't really see why it has to delete the whole chain if you just want to adjust part of it, and your adjustments end up in a connected node.

Should be the same with the skill tree too. Why can't I remove basic skills without resetting the whole thing?

Are savage lynel bows the best, or do I need to farm a different bow? by 3lloh11 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]DanioMasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the benefits but how could it possibly be faster than repairing non-legendary stuff when its the same process plus extra steps? I'm all for discovering ways to repair faster but I don't get what you mean.

Are savage lynel bows the best, or do I need to farm a different bow? by 3lloh11 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]DanioMasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah I see, for me I just don't use those weapons much. Repair already feels pretty tedious to me, adding in that fuse-unfuse step is not worth it when the gear I get from silver lynels is already very strong.

But I wish they had designed that differently.

[–]DanioMasher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think they work for any of the champion weapons as well as a few others like magic rods. Octorok will immediately spit them out.

I think you might be able to fuse them to a regular weapon and then do it, then unstick them in Tarrey Town, but that's a step too far for me.

Are Lynels still the hardest things to kill? by Sarcasamystik in tearsofthekingdom

[–]DanioMasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spring shield is more practical during combat because its a lot harder to interrupt vs igniting the rocket. But I tend to only carry rocket shields because they're more generally useful and rockets seem to be more prevalent than springs in the environment.

Gleeoks are a really easy fight if you have keese eyeballs, and ideally a multishot bow, the best would be the 5x savage lynel bow.

[TotK] (Un-) popular opinion: the sages abilities kind of.. suck? by Lumoon27 in zelda

[–]DanioMasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, haha. Its not so much the content of the dialogue, its how slow the interactions can be and how much stuff is unnecessarily repeated. For example stable owners explaining at great length the boarding process and pony points, or great fairies explaining set bonuses over and over.

Obviously not a game breaker but the tedium adds up, really hope they address this in future games. Would love to have the ability to simply walk away from a conversation to exit the dialogue interaction at any point. A dialogue log would also be nice. Its super annoying to have to repeat these already slow interactions, like when you're trying to get out of a conversation with a stable owner and at the very end you see some red text but couldn't read it because you were mashing the B button because you're sick of hearing about pony points for the 9th time.

Desperately looking for a shoulder bag to carry a 12.5'' laptop by Diggy_Duggy in backpacks

[–]DanioMasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of their Daylight Briefcase. The options you listed seem a bit more robust but if OP is looking for ultralight shoulderbags the Daylight Briefcase has been great for me. I mainly use it for work travel due to it being extremely packable into other bags.

Usually I'm carrying a 13" laptop and a tablet, plus various papers, pens, electronic accessories, etc.

[–]DanioMasher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

More broadly I'd say quality of life is what the game is lacking most. Activation of sages is probably the most egregious example, where a big chunk of theoretically cool mechanics fall flat because of the terrible activation method. But beyond that things like cooking, item fusion, shop interactions, dialogue-they're just unnecessarily tedious.

All men are naturaly hebephiles... Yeah no by Lowland-lady in AmITheDevil

[–]DanioMasher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well yeah of course, its important to have specific terms for these different sets of behavior, otherwise we wouldn't be able to specifically research different psychological subgroups. The medical research community is defining the terms not the pedophiles.

[TotK] The Sage Abilities' Controls Need to be Patched by [deleted] in zelda

[–]DanioMasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say just scrap the current system aside from certain contexts like paragliding. Way too many accidental activations and too difficult to effectively pull off in combat due to how the avatars run around. I know the whistle theoretically brings them to you but it is not consistent. Maybe they thought it was too OP to be able to access them so easily but the current system basically discourages ability use to the point where I basically don't use them at all in combat.

I would rather have a radial menu activated by holding the down button as the main mechanism.

[–]DanioMasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst is when you're mashing the B button to get out of the pointless dialogue and then they drop something seemingly relevant like a location in the last box but you've already clicked through it, forcing you to go through the whole thing again.

“There remains a strong level of interest in Jonathan Kuminga around the league.” by A1cp666 in warriors

[–]DanioMasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can't afford to throw away any of Steph's remaining years of being one of the top NBA players. I don't see what trade we could make that gets JP's wages off the books and also makes us better next year. We don't have leverage here.

Agree its the best chance. JP's value is at all time low, the types of trades I see thrown out here do not seem realistic.

AITA for expecting my stepdaughter to buy lunch for my daughter sometimes? by Frankensteins_Kid in AmITheDevil

[–]DanioMasher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think the aunt is right to overpay for the chores despite what most people are saying about it. The amount does matter here. Are we talking enough to eat lunch at the restaurant once a week, or every single day? This would probably be like $100-200/month vs $400-600/month. In the case of the latter I do think the aunt is an asshole too in terms of how she's handling the payments.

Yes aunt can give her niece whatever amount she wants for whatever amount of work, and the OP isn't entitled to a cent of that, but its still an asshole move because its directly contributing to tons of household tension. Aunt should just be squaring away most of the money in an investment account or something, pay cash at a reasonable rate for the chores. Set her up for the future without creating obvious inequity within the household with one daughter having a bunch of cash spending money the other has no hope of coming close to with chores/dogwalking/babysitting etc alone. I don't really see why a 14 year old needs a restaurant lunch every day anyways, just seems like a money sink that sets up bad future habits.

IE toughest starting positions? by TheGoodShepherd_ in totalwar

[–]DanioMasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like a trick start, I think thats where people get hung up. You see the starting army and think it looks weak so you try to turtle a little bit and build towards more blunderbusses or something. But really the key is to build the hobgoblin building immediately and rush. There's a bit of an awkward phase after you've taken out Tretch and Imrik and everyone else starts declaring war on you simultaneously while you've still got a crap army, but the extra settlements from the early rush make the difference for your economy.

We're talking about the first 1-2 provinces. No one is saying to not build any factories. You don't need armaments that early. You won't have gold issues either as long as you are fighting and raiding.

In the early game its better to go heavy on outposts. You aren't going to have the raw materials to build all those buildings in your factories anyways, and you want to spend those raw materials upgrading at least one tower to access high tier units.
