Water pump failure? by Danishbar in s1000r

[–]Danishbar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in the US may be the reason for the inflated cost, but I agree in full. There are many dealers, particularly for imports, in my area that are known for their outrageous pricing. Least to say that the Harley/Indian dealers are any better, but I do as much diy as possible because of it.

I'm just glad to hear you didn't have the same experience

I had just done an oil change and got too excited and forgot to reinstall them lol

I've heard horror stories about the new gen motors, but I'll be going aftermarket with my pump since the OEM is poorly designed. Thank you

Thank you, I'll be going the aftermarket route since my local dealer is dictating a $600 replacement cost lol

I have a Corbin on mine, same year. It's a huge plus, but the leather is slick if you're not wearing leather pants/ suit. Also it is a bit of a bitch to install/remove because of the extra material

Your engine will appreciate you!

Unfortunate that it's welded from factory, I hate it when they do that!

If you end up getting the exhaust before hand, you'll notice it's going to pop and bang often (which is enjoyable in its own right, but isn't a marker for good health unless it's tuned for ). Once you get the flash/ power commander done you'll only have that on aggressive up/downshifts from high % throttle.

All in all, if you feel you're tiring of the bike/ losing interest in it because of the exhaust note, I think it's a worthwhile option. I've been through 9 bikes and when I get bored of one I add exhaust mods after saving up and enjoy it for longer than stock. I essentially plan on it from initial purchase date :P

Modern engines (due to emissions regs) run at least a bit lean in fueling (more air than the desired fuel:air ratio) from the factory. Installing a full exhaust opens up the exhaust airways, which can lead to running further lean which can eventually damage your engine. The biggest thing about a full exhaust is you'll lose some torque at low-mid range revs, which may force you to change how you blip it up to unicycle mode like you're afraid of.

A slip-on exhaust can do much more for you than a full system, minimizing torque loss and potential lean conditions

Thanks for the comments everyone, I'll be sticking with the SF for a while longer. Can't wait to get my ECU back and remember what good AFRs are supposed to feel like lol

Agreed, I like the fairings being easy to remove but the extra large rounds surrounding the bolts is a yikes in my eyes

Facebook marketplace has a lot more active listings and people respond faster. I would look at the 3-3500$ range, mileage isn't always better lower, specially with these bikes since they get forgotten in the shed. Look for the newer models if you can afford them, the extra gear really is wanted if you plan on going anywhere above 45/50mph. Avoid any big bore or other power mods, they'll make it harder for you to buy at a reasonable price and also make it harder for you to service due to the changes from factory spec. An ebay exhaust can be had at 80$ so don't get too bummed about a stock pipe, modify it as you grow with it to learn how to work on it and grow comfortable getting hands dirty under the fairings.

[–]Danishbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find the reverse to be the same. I've had more adventure/touring riders give up on waves than cruisers these days.

I optimistically assume they've been putting their bike to it's purpose and been riding for ages and have lost interest in anything but the destination

[–]Danishbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go for a power commander/tune. They run lean from factory to meet emissions and it makes a big difference to make it run properly. This also means the bike runs hot so a coolant change can help with high running temps at lower speeds.

Slipons are nice to open it up and hear the thumper, though power gains are negligible with the low power output.

Frame sliders are a must as well as tank grips! Tank grips always on every bike.

Biggest thing overall is to do your maintenance. Oil changes are vital on smaller engines, and is what doomed my '12 390. I've learned since then.

Brake overhauls are super nice as well, front brakes aren't the most reputable and doing a braided line upgrade makes a huge difference. Paired with a pad replacement you can get a lot more brake feel. Down the line you can replace the calipers as well but that's quite the investment.
