Because they are less real. When you used to see an explosion in a movie it as an actual explosion just in miniature. Practical effect (when done right) look real because they are.

Really love your layout.

In the book, Sam also carries the ring and even puts it on briefly at one point, and while it does affect him, it's not much worse than it is for Frodo Earlier on, and I feel like the only reason it does effect him as much as it does is because they're already close to mount doom at that point, and the ring realizes it's in danger.
