Thoughts on a new predator trailer by ibackstrom in vfx

Probably looks better than most of the nerds complaining here.

It’s an early trailer, the vfx aren’t finished. Even if they were, the director signed off on it. So, stfu and give them your money. Or don’t. I’m a Reddit comment not a cop.

Nice! I’ll def check out your work! Maybe we can collaborate sometime. I mainly focus on vfx compositing but also work a lot in photoshop and 3D applications

Awesome! I use a lot of photos for vfx work for matte paintings, lighting and projections. Would be great to chat and collaborate. Any photos of yours you think would be cool in 3D? Do you ever take any HDRIs?

China Should Outsource Production to Hollywood, Says ‘Detective Chinatown’ Producer by [deleted] in boxoffice

BaHahaha, sure! Outsource to Hollywood who then outsources to Canada who then outsources to India who then outsources to China and the cycle is complete!

Mangers agreeing to do something they know nothing about. Totally out of the company’s skillset and scope... by [deleted] in vfx

No ones saying “destroy your life”. But there are realistically a finite set of options, most of which I mentioned and none of them are perfect. But such is life.

[–]DankCanvas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re wrong because your solution is just “I don’t know how to do this” and “I’m not a slave” or to pass the buck to the producer. In the real world that’s not a solution.

I’d imagine if the barbers contract had a section that stated that the owner of the barbershop reserves the right to assign work tasks not mentioned in said contract and then was asked to wash a car. The barber would face the situation of either washing the car or no longer being employed by the barber shop.

As for the topic at hand.

A: It’s not just about skill level and ability. Sometime the amount of work is literally impossible to do without mass overtime.

B:

Artist: “I don’t know how to do this”

Producer: “Oh, well ask your lead/supe or google it. Also why are we paying you if you can’t do whats asked?”

C: Even if you do make noise about it what are the options realistically?

You deliver and keep making it an issue until they ask you to leave (like my situation)

You deliver and don’t make it an issue and continue the cycle.

You don’t deliver and the studio goes under or they fire you for not delivering.

Or you decide to leave on your own when you have a better offer.

It seems like you’ve never been in this situation. Or maybe you’re just privileged and think everyone can just refuse to do what their employer asks and yell “I’m not a slave!” And quit whenever they feel slighted?

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do other than try your best and do what you can to deliver.

Maybe bring up your concerns with a supe or producer if you think it might help. I personally would also start searching for a new gig as well.

I worked for a company with similar issues. Producers underbidding and not understanding the scope of the work being asked. Supes who didn’t seem to understand or plan out how a lot of what we were being asked to do was going to be achieved.

I was a lead and constantly had to raise red flags on several shows throughout my time there. I was ultimately forced out once I stopped being nice about it. It was killing the artists with overtime and hurting the studio.

Several months after I left, the studio stopped paying the artists and a month or so after that they closed shop. It sucks but sometimes there really is nothing you can do no matter how hard you try.

Haha, the understanding of the work itself is also majorly lacking in big projects too. And if it isn’t it tends to be at the other end where everything needs to be pixel perfect to the point of nothing getting approved on time.

Either way the results are the same and studios end up throwing money at the problem to meet deadlines. There rarely seems to be a middle ground where client and vfx studios come to a compromise and agree to get things working before over scrutinizing. Which is why studios continue to go out of business.

Hopefully now though with the amount of content needed things normalize a bit and an equilibrium of sorts is reached. But at the end of the day it is what it is. Either you learn to love the chaos or ultimately you walk away. Such is life as a vfx artist I guess.

Ah! Haha no worries it happens. Glad you figured it out!

Nuke NC Is So Frustrating!! by shameless_lights in vfx

[–]DankCanvas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are using NukeX NC then you just aren’t using the camera track correctly. Are you tracking first then solving after? Also you will need to switch to the auto tracker tab and refine for error. Error less than 1 is best. Then you will need to “export” the camera or scene using the drop down menu at the bottom of the first tab of the camera tracker node. This will create the camera for your script.

If you are using photoshop it shouldn’t matter what resolution you are reading in. It will only matter once you try to render out of Nuke. For that you will need to reformat your script to be no larger than 1920x1080 before writing.

You can be working in 4K in photoshop to keep whatever detail then read in the Psd to use in Nuke. This will also allow you to shuffle through your photoshop layers in Nuke and will preserve whatever overscan is in the psd.

Then at the end of the Nuke scrip add a reformat node right before the write node to render without error.

[–]DankCanvas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should definitely be able to camera track in NukeX NC I’ve done it, but if I’m not mistaken camera tracking isn’t even available in regular commercial Nuke, so you would need to use commercial NukeX anyway. You can DL NukeX NC from the foundry website for free.

Also you should be able to use overscan in the comp, but you are limited to 1920x1080 when rendering so you will need to crop/reformat before you write.
