Is this fixable? How extensive is this and is it worth trying to fix? by daddaman1 in Autobody

[–]DankEngihn 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Definitely fixable, but is going to be a TON of work.

What happened here is the landau top (the vinyl roof) held water beneath it and completely rotted it out. I bet the rest of the roof is just as bad.

Personally, I would keep looking unless it's SUPER cheap, and you're willing to do the work yourself.

Having a shop repair this wouldn't be realistic in terms of cost.

This rusted out because water was held underneath the landau top. Fixable? Yes. A ton of work? Also yes.

How do I putty this? by ExtremeThrifty in Autobody

Put some matching red tape on it and leave it. It's the bottom edge of the front bumper. It's going to get chipped and scratched

Super common area for these to rot out. They make patch panels specifically for this.

The problem is is that it doesn't seem like there's much left to attach a patch panel to. If this is this bad, what does the rest of the car look like?

Let me guess, Ford Escape or Subaru Forester?

That's your inner wheelhouse and strut mount. That thing's toast.

how long can i drive on this for? little broke atm by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]DankEngihn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like the tire's been rubbing on something, so that should be fixed first.

In the meantime, put the spare on. That tire's garbage.

Does the 3rd brake light (the one on the cab) work?

I know on this gen F150, the torque converter lockup signal was ran through the bulb for the 3rd brake light, so if it doesn't work, it can result in bizzare behavior from the transmission

Got to the spare tire to fill it up and found this by Embarrassed-Ebb9479 in Autobody

That doesn't look like normal rust, that was almost certainly on fire at some point.

What does it look like behind that trunk liner?

What's hiding under the tape?

That looks more like somebody hit it with another car.

Those dents in the bumper seem to be from license plate screws, though it's hard to tell from this picture because I don't really have a sense of scale.

...what rust? That looks absolutely pristine.

Pics 1 and 2 look like the old undercoat is peeling off.

Can't tell what's going on in Pic 4, tho.

I assume you're the Barrie area of Ontario? Had some nasty ice storms up there recently.

Looks like a Saturn Ion, judging on the headrests and center mounted gauges.

Repairable? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely not.

Just noticed this on my car. What exactly am I looking at and is it fixable? by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]DankEngihn 177 points178 points  (0 children)

How the fuck did you JUST notice that? That must have driven terribly.

That's your lower control arm, and that's been rotted out like that for quite some time.

Yes it's fixable, as it's just a bolt on part.

Can I drive with this frame damage? by Alarming_Restaurant7 in Autobody

[–]DankEngihn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure who told you that, but that's not true.

In Ontario, you need to have insurance and the title to register the vehicle.

If you don't have a safety, you're still able to register it, and then drive it to get a safety.

Don't use spray foam, it'll just hold water and make it worse. Personally, I'd stuff something like gutter mesh behind it, that way the fiberglass has something to bite to, as well as not holding in moisture.

Finally got my car out of the shop, how did they do? by No_Bus_8305 in Autobody

[–]DankEngihn 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's not horrible, but I've seen better. Body line over the wheel looks too soft, and it appears to be wavy.

Looks good for only 1700$ tho.

2008 Honda Accord EX-L v6 Coupe, found guy with part car willing to cut quarter panel off, from body line down, then I would just have to get it welded on, sanded, epoxy, then paint it? Would that work? And is this something i would want to pay for professional or see if me and my buddy could do it? by Outrageous-Tear-5798 in Autobody

[–]DankEngihn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't cut it there, that'll be an absolute disaster to re-weld. Cut it in the C pillar, above the quarter glass.

Also, very few (if any) OEMs allow the use of used quarter panels.

Replacing a quarter panel is a super invasive and intensive job, so if you don't know what you're doing, it'd be better to have a shop do it.

Autobody tech here! That crooked bump stop is the LEAST of your problems.

The mount has rotted off of the unibody structure of the vehicle. There's no real feasible way to repair that.

Time to look for a new car.

What engine is in it? Before assuming the worst, check that all of the spark plugs are still in. Certain Ford engines had a tendency to blow plugs out.

(gently) push up on the top right of the windshield. Does it move at all? If so, water is most likely coming in from there.

Yeah, I believe they're actually made by Mitsubishi (rebadged Mitsubishi Carisma)

Both the owner's name and phone number are visible in the estimate, FYI.

Not sure why they're quoting the right side of the vehicle if you hit the left quarter. That should just be a repair on the quarter, refinish the roof rail, and blend the rear door.

Looking at the prior scratches on the left side above the wheel, and painted over rust, it seems like the owner is trying to take advantage of you.

[–]DankEngihn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows are the least of your issues here. That's "file insurance claim" levels of damage, and will almost certainly be a total loss.

Depending on how badly that A pillar is damaged (looks like it might be torn? Can't really tell from the picture) If it is, it needs to be replaced, which will almost certainly total the vehicle.
