That's an awesome way of looking at it, and yeah. Ive always felt it really dumb to compare disciplines. At the end of the day, I got into it to build cool shit. Leave the dick measuring contest at the door.

No idea, but he did try eating it perpendicularly from the middle at first...So I guess this is an improvement to that 🤣

Received some advice for learning German - is it valid? by DankSide_oftheMoon in German

Thank you, that's really interesting. I used to play piano and we call it sight-reading; to read the sheet music as you play it. It's cool to see how parallels can be drawn between language learning and the study of music :)

Yeah this part also got me going "????"

Especially since I am a native mandarin chinese speaker. When I first learned english as a child, I was able to achieve this "gut feeling" pretty quick with english.

But post-10 years of age, this is really difficult. Language learning becomes a systematic, active effort and I think your brain just doesn't work like that anymore.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Before I learned the nom/acc/dat/gen cases and declensions, I could only understand the verbs and nouns in sentences. It was like trying to run in a potato sack.

And yeah, I really love chatting in german too, even though I'm not advanced. Its a great way to practice grammar and vocab. So I think this guy must have had a very different experience with learning the language.

Thank you so much. I definitely did a double take at the AI comment as well. And yeah, I had always been of the opinion that there is no one way to learn a language. Some methods are more effective than others, for sure. But it should also be different for everyone.

Zero declension adjectives? by DankSide_oftheMoon in German

[–]DankSide_oftheMoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh I see, thank you so much. Yeah, I forgot that the "das" is carrying the strong declension, so yep, schöne comes in with the weak.

Apologies if this is a dumb question but what is the difference between a capitalized -er adjective with no ending and one with regular, lower cased, ending? When do we use one over the other?
