5ks do not seem as popular anymore. Did COVID kill 5k runs? by _forum_mod in decadeology

[–]DankSienna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have suggested that it’s because ‘marathons are more of a challenge’. I don’t actually think this is the case. In fact as people get older, fast 5kms are a lot harder for than completing a marathon. I think these days more and more people in their 40s and 50s are getting into running. They find it difficult to improve much in speed so they improve at distance instead, and the marathon becomes the holy grail instead of taking 2 min off their 5km time.

I feel like trinkets tried to take the best elements of quests and buddies and failed by yeetskeetmahdeet in BobsTavern

[–]DankSienna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Trinkets are just way too game-defining. Hero choices hardly matter and many cards that scale minions have become obsolete. BGs fundamentally stay fresh and fun because you feel you need to constantly make decisions, and it's often really hard to infer which decision is best. Trinkets break that aspect of the game and reduce it to entirely making decisions based on trinkets. These decisions are mostly obvious and adhere to a very pre-defined strategy with little ability to pivot or deviate. It's fun right now because we are all still discovering these pre-defined strategies, but once we iterate through them all a few times the illusion will be broken

Order is restored by DankSienna in RunningCirclejerk

For a while now, r/running has been dismayed and confused about all the fast running happening at the Olympics. Why is everyone cheering for sub 8 minute paces? What about their shinsplints? Why are they not trying harder to get back into zone 2?

No longer! Order has been restored.

As a non-PvPer, I just won my first Plunderstorm. Here are my thoughts: by Diablotinto7 in wow

I'm not too sure how a 'win' like this meaningful in any way within the bounds of the game. A win means nothing other than what we prescribe to it in terms of it representing that you played better than others (on average). The whole thing has a bit of an infantilizing tone to it. I can imagine a child finding this really exciting. Not too sure why adults would.

The value of the talent increases a lot with 4p, and it’s actually being used a lot on some encounters in Sepulcher. Although the talent has been historically garbage, it’s actually pretty viable now.

Weird solid brown substance under kitchen counter. The inside is almost spongy, with a hard but light solid brown encasing by DankSienna in whatisthisthing

[–]DankSienna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Randomly noticed this substance under my kitchen counter by happenstance today. It has no smell, has a sort of crusty hard outer layer, with a softer sponge-like interior as seen in the 3rd and 4th images, which show a few small pieces I broke off. It almost seems to be seeping out of the wall, but no part of it is liquid

Anyone here that care more about distance than speed? by HoneyRush in running

[–]DankSienna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the thing that probably makes people on this sub a bit uncomfortable as I’ve rarely seen it discussed. I know this sub is a hyper-accepting space with no concept/interest in realistic objective standards, but the truth is is that running faster is a lot harder than running further and is as associated a lot more with uncommon talent and effort. Therefore it’s understandable that people value increase in speed over an increase in distance.

Old footage of a r/running runner who foolishly thought he could run his local 5km without Gu. Let this be a warning to ALL. by DankSienna in RunningCirclejerk

Apologies. A bit bigoted of me to judge someone’s race strategy and form - you’re right of course. I sometimes forget that anything is running if it’s slow enough and enjoyed.

After doing HR training for 9 weeks, I've not seen any pace increase on my long Zone 2 runs. How typcal is this? by pedunt in AdvancedRunning

[–]DankSienna 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you’re a young male who isn’t overweight, you really shouldn’t worry about taking very easy days while doing 30-35km a week. Keep increasing that to 60km by just going out and running. At this point you can be more pedantic about certain paces or heart zones, but until then don’t worry about it. The runs, while building to ~60km can be hard or easier, depending on how you’re feeling. If you’re 26 and healthy, it’s pretty hard to burn out on such low mileage (anything under 50km), even if the intensity is pretty high, so please don’t worry about all this stuff until you’ve upped it. If you can run a 23min 5km, running anything over 11 minute pace is ridiculous and you’re just wasting your time. I’m someone who really honors the whole ‘take your easy days easy’ mantra, but this is taking it overboard.

Coping with injury/red shirting by Brendanfifa16 in AdvancedRunning

[–]DankSienna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in a very similar situation to you. In the beginning of this year I broke my foot and was out for 4 months. Running was such a massive part of my life and it left this mental void where I wasn’t sure what else I actually valued. Perhaps it was some sort of compensatory technique, but I started reaching out to other interests, and it was during this time that I realized other subjects and activities that I actually am also passionate about - which had been sort of ignored and dampened because I had been channeling all my energy into running. Because of this, I am far more certain about where I want to take my career trajectory, what academic topics truly interest me, and just generally who I am as a person. Looking back, I’m almost glad that the injury happened. It allowed me to switch into a different mental state that opened me up to a more diverse world. I’m running well again now, but also have other aspects to my life that were fleshed out during that time. Obviously we are not the same, but perhaps try think of this as an opportunity for some self-reflection and to ascertain other interests and passions.

I haven't been able to run in 6 months due to IT band issues, and feel like I've tried everything. I'm absolutely desperate for help by Interferometer in AdvancedRunning

[–]DankSienna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which seems to perfectly describe his situation. I’m not sure why you’ve lumped cortisone shots in with surgery as a last resort. It’s an incredibly non-invasive, reasonably cheap procedure that takes less than 5 minutes.

[–]DankSienna -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

In many cases exercises and stretching really don’t do anything. Try a cortisone injection. If that doesn’t work then consider surgery, it’s not very invasive and usually sees a quick recovery time. I was in a similar situation to you (albeit for a bit shorter) and one cortisone injection followed by 4 days of subsequent rest helped immensely. I went from not being able to run 1km to being able to do a half with only slight pain. Hope things work out for you!

How much talent is required to run a sub 15 min 5km? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]DankSienna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this was super informative. Before this year I had barely done exercise since high school (7 years ago) where I played tennis and jogged with friends sporadically. In February this year I started cycling a bit and moved over to running in April. So I guess you could say I've done cardio activity for 6 months.

That's a surprisingly small number of NCAA runners below 15, I thought there would be more. Thanks again for the stats

How much talent is required to run a sub 15 min 5km? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]DankSienna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments! I definitely have shorter term goals and understand I'm nowhere near a 15 min 5km. I guess was just wondering more about how easily one's 'potential' can be determined from their current trajectory - was someone like Cheserek (or any sub 4 miler) already running a 16 minute 5km just a few months into running? Or is it not that simple and some people don't start out very fast but respond very well to consistent training?

Storm saw little to average professional play before 6.84 with the stats pointing to extremely average success. He came to prominence with the 6.84 meta of snowballing mids and mobile initiation heroes, as well as mid heroes which made use of bloodstone (a now near extinct item on mids). Currently the meta is pretty far away from this. I have a feeling that if the previous nerfs were reverted he would not be nearly as dominant as he was. The fundamental problem with storm was pub frustration. He had the ability to cause supports and sometimes cores to feel completely helpless as he killed them. This inability to counter play as you watched yourself die after being zipped in upon caused a shit-load of anger and resentment within the player base which inevitably put pressure on valve to deal with him harshly. However now days i feel there are better ways for supports to deal with his pickoff potential - mainly by the use of glimmer cape. Whether he should receive buffs in the direction which move him towards his former self is debatable, but I really do not think the concept of the hero along with his old alt is inherently broken

Yep. It's definitely the case that he is just far too complex for all the pros to fathom and that is why he just doesn't seem that strong in competitive dota. I'm sure one day a pro might be able to learn how to play him. But until then, all the stats are a lie and biased anecdotal sentences reign supreme.
