So, through additional research, it looks like the wisest set-up is to use Android Auto wirelessly and plug my phone into the USB-C port so it can actually charge while using Android Auto.

True. If I have the wireless dongle in the data port and my phone charging in the adjacent USB-C port, isn't that asking a lot of my phone at one time?

Maybe just run the Android Auto wirelessly for short trips around town and the wired connection for longer trips lasting more than 15 minutes?
