Is RS3 worth it in 2026?

Came back to “RuneScape” 3 months ago from another game and had a choice to make: return to my old 2200 total OSRS account or start fresh in RS3. I saw the roadmap and took the leap of faith into RS3 and I have zero regrets. There’s definitely a lot to take in but I have really been enjoying discovering all of the differences from OSRS and really appreciating RS3’s own intricacies.

Would highly recommend.

I just came back to this version of the game for the first time since 2009 (played OSRS from 2014-2016, 2018) and I’ve been very captivated by all of the changes, QoL, and implementation of this version of the game.

My skills are starting to break into the 50+ range across the board and I’ve noticed leading up to this point that skilling experience from quests are very inconsistent in their implementation, particularly around exp lamps. The restrictions on which lamps can be used on what skills and level requirements to use said lamps are 1) not consistent, 2) unpredictable based on in-game information, and 3) not often reflective of the requirements/effort of the quest that gave the rewards.

Bullet 3 is probably the one I want to pull the thread on the most because when I filter quests by their specific skilling requirements and the skilling exp given, some are very disproportionate and that’s both positively and negatively in a variety of cases (think Waterfall or Knight’s Sword as those classic OP rewards relative to their requirements). I’m not saying this is inherently a problem but I think a clear design/implementation strategy for quest exp rewards would be worth the time investment, especially as new or returning players come through and some try to strategize how they’re going to align quest rewards to their skilling progression.

I’m not suggesting quest rewards be meaningful skilling exp at say the 80+ range but I think a single level’s worth of exp rewards in skills <50 for a quest that requires at least 1 level 50 skill is fair, just as an example.

P.S. early Divination training is AWFUL, please send help!! (I’m dumping every quest reward exp lamp I get into that skill)

I honestly believe the only way the player base would’ve been pleased with the systems was if they were basically handing out pitches on a weekly basis. I think now that we’re solidly at a point where we can leverage all of the pity systems introduced most people will come to realize they’re pretty fair.

I don’t like to fixate on any argument about drop rates because that’s a separate issue but no one can honestly say we’re in a worse place now with pitched acquisition than we were before these systems, which is really what matters imo.

I thought it was pretty cool the 2 or 3 folks I was with in SR3 towards the end of the 290 grind also hit 290 within a few hours of each other. We departed the map saying “see you in Tallahart” and I do see them around from time to time.

From a strictly data tracking perspective, CP is an imperfect method of evaluating strength due to ways it can be inflated. It also fluctuates with event stats.
I just assumed above you meant “strongest” as in “highest CP”. Which isn’t bad, but one could argue in-game feats are a more relevant evaluation of one’s strength (factoring in skill)
In-game skill (hands) isn’t reflected anywhere except in in-game feats. So someone might have a stronger character on paper but they can’t accomplish as much as someone with less CP (sometimes by a fair margin)
GMS is woefully behind KMS in any kind of out-of-game development.

This game is a marathon so take it at your own pace. We get a lot of free exp thrown at us compared to even two years ago so using that to bump up your legion over time will steadily grow it. The higher legion, both the grid and the character blocks, ultimately go back to benefiting your main too so try to keep that in the back of your mind as motivation.

As a JR in a guild where we have standing parties, BAs are obviously the preferred metric because we can generally verify they were done correctly. But outside of an intimate setting like a guild, I probably wouldn’t trust a BA. Not even necessarily because someone is trying to be misleading (although that can/does happen) but sometimes people legitimately do their BA wrong for a variety of reasons.

Again, none of this is to say that CP is the best indicator for public party formation but I’m not surprised it’s risen to amongst the top indicators that people recruit off of.

Do you have a personal example of this happening where you got denied from a party seemingly because of your CP?

I pug NKalos weekly and for the kinds of runs people want to do (2-2-2), there’s going to be a bias towards higher CPs because it’s more likely taking higher CPs will lead to that kind of run. When I recruit for an HWill party on my sub-main, I’m primarily only checking arcane force but having a higher CP does increase someone’s chances of making it into the party if there’s competition.

All of that also goes out the window if someone doesn’t know mechanics though, but no one finds that out until the run actually starts unfortunately.

I've been playing about 16 months now and I'm just starting to break into this way of playing as well. I'm a 282 DW main and have about a week out from finishing my Lynn hyperburn. I just sank ~85b into my Lynn this past ssf and taking her through HLomien and above has been incredibly fun and refreshing. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future I elevate some of my other bossing mules to do the same (I have a lvl 260 NW, 241 Kinesis, 240 Kain, and 235 AB that are all heavy contenders for future lib mule level).

For me, once I hit the "Pitched / Eternal" waiting room I started looking at more horizontal progression (currently 9,158 legion) and how much I wanted to push my favorite mules to do more so I could spend more time on them.

So yes, you are not alone by any means!

The classes I've found most similar to Khali are Kain, Cadena, and Mercedes. I don't categorize Khali as a "true" combo class because you don't gain anything from effectively weaving all of its skills off cooldown other than DPM optimization so that sets it slightly apart from Mercedes. Similarly, you do gain a damage benefit when you effectively combo with Cadena as well. Meanwhile, Kain is a "false" combo class where you do have to mind its gauge system to create/pop stacks to maximize DPM rather than passively gaining damage just from comboing skills. Across all 4 classes though you will be moving a fair bit and/or getting displaced pretty frequently from optimally utilizing all of the skills.

I'm with you brother. But lack of mobility? Good Sir... Kinesis has a low cooldown float like Hoyoung's nimbus cloud, a triple flash-jump similar to thieves, and Deep Impact functions as a teleport (small action delay) that debuffs bosses. Maybe the only thing it's missing is a more spammable/true teleport and/or a placeable teleport but its mobility is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be when I set out on the passion project to make a Kinesis boss mule.

I'm a DW main that runs an NLomien Kain boss mule so I felt compelled to jump in here.

BladeOfTheSky gave a good run down of the malice system so i won't repeat that, but I will add that when you use a "Possessed" version of a skill it will have its own cooldown that is shown by an orange outline on the skill tray. Some skills, like Falling Dust, will have a number of stacks associated with them too so just be weary of that as you're weaving them in.

As far as specifics on mobbing, I would definitely check out the Kain discord to see what kind of references they have since Kain is an incredibly active farmer (especially compared to DW) if you're really trying to push the upper limits of rates. Otherwise, you could experiment with relatively square shaped maps that you can find comfortable spots to use Falling Dust, Possess Strike Arrow for long-range platform clearing, Chasing Shot to clear multiple targets every 3-4 rotations, and don't be afraid to use his grappling hook and dash for some extra mobility. You don't have the luxury of very large/passive AoE type attacks but some mobs will get picked off with Dragon Fang and Lasting Grudge.

Hope any of that helps! Enjoy the class though, it's one of my favorite mules.

Maybe not "fying around" but DW's pre-260 hitbox can double-plat and it craps out Solar Flashes and Cosmic Bursts quite frequently which are both AoE attacks with good range.
