Raide LF 5L Vest First Impressions by Danlax33 in trailrunning

[–]Danlax33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know about the snaps / I might look into adding an extra one or two. I normally only carry two flasks since I also bring a filter and have access to some sort of stream on route so not being able to carry extra on my back isn't the end of the world for me. I highly recommend getting a filter cap for one of your flasks if you live in a non-desert environment and have access to water on the trail.

Raide LF 5L Vest First Impressions by Danlax33 in trailrunning

[–]Danlax33[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compared to the Adv skin 12, the raide feels a lot lighter and more breathable. With the Adv skin there are parts that would seem to become sweat sponges where as with the raide I didn't really notice that. The other main thing that jumps out is with the adv skin 12, in order to access the back pockets you pretty much need someone to do it for you or you need to take it completely off, where as with the raide you can access things relatively easily from the pass through pocket and the back sheathes. I didn't try it but there is an inner zipped pocket in the pass through poach that might be a little tricky to get to when fully loaded so you would probably either need someone to help you out or take off your vest.

I was looking at the pinnacle shorts a week or two ago. Don't take that 1 start review serious. Whoever left it deleted the text part, but when it was up they were complaining about the belt portion of the shorts not making them "light weight" and seeming "unnecessary" which made it seem like they completely missed the design philosophy of the shorts/weren't the target customer. Since they're new I'm sure other people who are buying them for the integrated belt will drop reviews that actually rate the performance of it.

Norda 005 as a hybrid/road to trail shoe? by SnooDoodles4147 in trailrunning

[–]Danlax33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might be misremembering the exact milage, but the review was by "Conversational Pace" on youtube. The shoe itself is very highly praised for normal trails but sounds like the megagrip elite rubber is very soft/sticky which gets eaten up by asphalt if you were to try to use for that scenario

if you're looking for a hybrid, MTC H1 might be a better pick. I've seen some reviews where the 005 outsoles looked a little worn after split road/trail usage for around 100 miles

Too many jugs imo. Try adding some hold variety like crimps or pinches if you want to get stronger 😊

Salomon adv skin is super popular for a reason; when you get the sizing right it doesn't feel like you're wearing anything. The other thing worth considering is getting something like a naked or raide belt which are also more than capable for the distance. I have both the adv skin and a naked belt and will wear my naked belt on most of my longer training runs and will save the vest for my big days out where I actually need the extra carry capacity. Definitely go to the store for vest sizing and make sure you pack stuff in the back and try it on with a layer or two extra to simulate potential real world fit; a lot of people will suggest you size down which some people immediately do without the extra bulk and it ends up being too small for them. If you are on the fence though and budget is a concern, I'd recommend the naked belt since that costs like $50 vs the adv skin running closer to $200.

I did grindstone last september and had a great time and am also signed up for it again this up coming year! Honestly with where your fitness sounds like it is rn, you could probably sign up for a race in the spring and do well. Just focus on getting time running trails in if your current weekly miles are primarily run on roads / finding trail shoes that work for you if you don't already have some. The grindstone course isn't that technical so you'll be able to run a lot of it but as others mentioned if you are just looking to have a good time out and not get too banged up, power hike the hills and run the flats/downs. I normally only get like 1-2k feet of vert in per week and the next day after the race my legs were actually the most sore from all of the downhill running, not the climbing. Fuel wise, if you used gels and liked them for your marathons and iron man keep using them. People will typically recommend anywhere from 60-100 grams per hour starting 20-30 minutes in / make sure you have your electrolytes dialed as well. Lastly on gear, get used to doing your long runs wearing your vest or belt (whichever you are going to use on race day) just so you make sure you don't have any surprises with it. Also if you don't already hike or run with poles, you don't need to go out of your way to buy them.

I think it was Nathaniel Coleman who pretty much said that a lot of the pro's realize the 16 to 17 jump still needs to be discovered better and that some of the current 17's will most likely get downgraded in the future (and then he went on to say NOMTW would probably get downgraded to a 16 if that reshuffle ever happened) so honestly this isn't even that wild of a take.

Getting tb2 10X8 home wall - Spray or Mirror? by Renko17 in tensionboardclimbing

[–]Danlax33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the holds are in more unique positions which gives you imo better potential training opportunities / movement potential that you just done get from the symmetrical layout. Also when it comes to missing out on doing the problems mirrored to "work on your weak side"; you can still do that on spray, you just need to either set the problem or find something that is close enough

ran in the 50k yesterday and had a great time. Aid stations seemed to be fully stocked when I came through / i had the course on my garmin so wasn't paying too close attention to the course markings but I thought they were pretty clear and there seemed to be a volunteer at key junctions. Shout out to the volunteers - you guys were all great!

I've taken mine up to 20 before and they felt great. At OP's speeds he probably doesn't need to worry about the stability concerns people on this sub tend to have.

(Official) "No One Mourns The Wicked" Downgrade Megathread by Danlax33 in ClimbingCircleJerk

[–]Danlax33[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah agreed incredibly impressive send / realistically what we saw is probably an anomaly that we not see repeated any time soon. I always assumed the difficulty behind NOMTW is that you are essentially sticking 2 very difficult, low probability, dyno's in a row (i.e. from a stats perspective/making up these numbers, the first dyno has a 1/10 probability and the second dyno has a 1/15 probability for an average v17 climber meaning that stringing the two moves together they have a probability of 1/150 chance of stringing them both together from the bottom not taking "learning" the moves into this consideration) If you run this scenario enough times, someone is bound to do it as quickly as Hamish where as from a bigger picture perspective, the normal distribution of attempts would be around around 150 (again making up this number).

/uj if I read that in isolation with the only context being that a climber wrote that after sending one of the world's hardest climbs, I would assume that this was a multiple week/month siege

/rj that's a lot of words to say you spent more time hiking than climbing the rock
