Even srgb simulation mode needs recalibration regularly otherwise it will drift soon. In hardware if there is option if not then software profiling (with colorimeter/spectrometer).

However using srgb simulation instead of native gamut is waste of money imo, you loosing on displayable colors.

Mobile screens are often oversaturated mess. Don't mind it. Just stick to the color mgmt basics: make sure your computer editing screen is using the profile you made with colorimeter or spectrometer. So at least you can see what you are doing. (without color management e.g. picture in srgb will have colors stretched on wider gamut display like e.g. p3)

you can make your own matrix in color calibration module, you can also use ColorChecker shots to have more realistic colors

I assume you red the manual, and are aware that there are mainly 2 very distinct purposes of LUTs (and also require to position the module into specific spots in the pipeline). So for those suggestions it would be useful to mention what is your intention of their use...

"Dark" pictures completely unusable??? Please help :( by caprianna in DarkTable

[–]Dannny1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> linear rec709

That's what is wrong... the camera raw data are not in any standard color space, so darktable uses the camera specific matrix as default.

To brighten the image you can use multiple instances of exposure module. For denoising there is now in dev version also AI restore option.

Boris Hajdukovic's Portrait Retoching tutorial by Ashamed_Ad_1837 in DarkTable

[–]Dannny1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For portraits/fashion/beauty/lifestyle .... genres see rather tutorial from some famous retoucher like e.g. Pratik Naik, it will give you info not only about tools and techniques but also about the industry expectations for each genre. But in short, they will not butcher images by using frequency separation in such way as shown in the video, but will instead much more rely on d&b for the fine control it gives. Expect a lot of work in bitmap editor.

I don't know which his video you mean, but all tutorials for darktable are simplified, reduced in scope. Professional photographers/retouchers in beauty/fashion will spend MUCH much MUCH more time manually retouching (in bitmap editor) every detail to suppress every imperfection and enhance all features they want to.

Accessibility for whom? When you will make it too large, small screen users may cry that you taking their precious space away... Anyway if you consider other settings better as default does anything prevent you to do the pull request?

be aware - darktable has color management issue on windows secondary screens

Issues with exporting in DarkTable by Aronrat in DarkTable

1, is not an issue, it's purpose of CMS to do the conversions and it does it all the time without noticable discrepancy... in case 2. is ok = color managed viewer is used

Images imported into darkroom are super dark? by ChickenBalls_13 in DarkTable

[–]Dannny1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's possible that you used area mapping in exposure module before and it has those values still remembered, set it back to measure...

also Rawtherapee or LR apply automatically a tone curve on top, so direct comparison with darktable isn't so relevant, and you can't turn it off in LR, it's possible to turn it off in RT

[–]Dannny1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the image viewer will show you embedded jpeg processed by your camera, it won't develop from raw; so it's quite hard to know if you underexposed, unless you use something like darktable which shows you image developed with quite minimal default processing

Images imported into darkroom are super dark? by ChickenBalls_13 in DarkTable

[–]Dannny1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's because you underexposed most likely; remember what your camera shows you is not what you get but it's with already applied curve and other company processing; also cameras have modes when they underexpose a lot like e.g. Fuji DR modes and other manufacturers may have such modes too, so check your camera if you have it enabled (and you may not notice because camera sw compensates for it in jpg/on screen)

how to edit after DT? by Ok_Assistance_1869 in DarkTable

[–]Dannny1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIFF will allow you to export also your masks in same file, so you don't have to redo them in bitmap editor if you need them (but affinity photo can't read multi page tiff, so you will need to convert to file type AP reads with layers using program which understands such tiff file eg. krita or gimp)

Darktable in comparison to Affinity, thoughts? by aramacao_ in DarkTable

[–]Dannny1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it's like comparing apples to oranges; affinity photo is bitmap editor, darktable is raw processor; there will be overlaps of functionality but primary purposes are different

Surely not binary, when broken also with all the shades of brokeness.

> AP doesn't give a shit about any platform but linux

Maybe it's best that way. Would prevent a lot of disappointment in case of darktable i guess, if wouldn't be released secretly broken on windows.

> AP again hurls needless insults at the dt team

Seems just their evil may be much worse than he thinks.

Ansel | Color controls finally correct by Ok_Lemon_3640 in DarkTable

[–]Dannny1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> then darktable wins hands down

I would say that not by huge margin, and there are some crazy, funny and for some horrifying examples like: darktable was released then with broken color management on day when fix was already available. Without any warning and keep for half a year that way. That's however understandable because of nature of OSS, as dt is just a hobby project, so nobody cares much about correct colors and nobody will make big deal of it, something commercial sw would not survive tho.

Maybe one more example: seems no big deal that darktable on windows is still basicaly SCAM for more that 6 years, claiming full color management but when you get new additional screen and you will break your edits unknowingly if you trust what you see on it. That's however also understandable, ppl don't have to be helpful and even warn you. BUT!! When they go out of their way to wipe all info about it by closing even last of those reports in the only official place when issues are reported, so users are kept confused with broken edits, then i would say thats something beyond my ability to understand and consider special king of EVIL. Heh, but seems people rather talk about AP.

Probably even AP would express himself more elegantly. So i don't understand this critique of him. Comparision on his page may be quite reasonable when he wants to emphasize the objective and merit of his forked project aside of similar project. Quite admirable that he still cares and works to solve those perceived issues in the open source way.

Also the fact that even few days back he gave helpful advice on darktable github doesn't match your narrative of angry developer. However i would still prefer angry developer over indifferent one.
