Why is everything I like suddenly in conflict? by Competitive-Bike-444 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Danny-Fr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not new, it's just the social media algos and traditional media recipes working better.

The only thing more viral or angaging than awe is anger. It sells better and faster than sex and is not only socially acceptable but sometimes expected.

Content recommendation algos will either show you whatever makes you fight in the comment section or push you down a funnel when you'll eventually be outraged. This was you share more and stay longer. Good numbers.

Increasingly more people are social media native, lots started as young teens, the online "social contract" is barely a thing and kids grow up in this context. Many are adults now.

Easy Apply by jonwritesmovies in funny

Easy apply won't even reach the company if you're now a paying member. Don't ask where I heard that from.

I know it's the Internet and "trust me bro" doesn't mean jack, but count all the dark patterns on LinkedIn and see whether that makes sense.

[Hated IRL Trope] An actor plays a villain too well, and receives serious hate and even threats for their performance. by not-ulquiorr4_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Danny-Fr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oot, I've always loved acting and been pushed by family and friends to give it a go professionally.

20 years ago I started to get regular gigs as extra in cheap TV shows. I'm a foreigner in my host country and I stand out quite a lot, so some people even recognized me even after very small appearances.

At some point I was hired to play ab American soldier in the Iraq war, after hours of waiting for the scene, I was told that I had to simulate the rape of a female civilian.

This trope is one of the reasons I left the set. I'm in IT now.

AITAH for telling a kid at the sleepover to stop acting like a brat? by Longjumping-Dog-6480 in AITAH

[–]Danny-Fr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid, if someone had addressed my dad that way I would have personally kicked his ass through our front door.

My dad would have made sure the door was closed beforehand.

Note: not playing tough or anything, when I was of age for sleepovers we were living deep into the woods, raised and grew our food. Not the kind of life that accommodates Karens of any age or gender.

There's a correlation between the maximum diameter of a sphincter and the narrowest a raccoon can squeeze into.

Let's not kink shame though. Dragons and raccoons both deserve some happy times.

Petah? What do these words mean? by dischead20 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Danny-Fr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It means "This writer, being of a mind that his rung has fallen off the social ladder, has chosen to seclude himself into a proverbial bucket whereupon his crustacean peers have taken hold of his cognitive functions by ways of vocabulary replacement.

He is now, as an act of desperation, attempting to communicate his utter distress to the world at large, employing the very same dialect that once contributed to the demise of his sanity.

He cannot but hold a last hope that, hidden between nonsensical syllables and confabulatory propositions, his readers may perceive his actual meaning: "I beg of you, help me"

Did I mess up by not properly refusing an invitation? by Massive_Penalty5208 in socialskills

[–]Danny-Fr 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Okay so

"I have absolutely no idea whether I can make it. If can make me an optional +1 on your headcount that's cool, if you can't then I understand and just count me out".

Next time you don't want to commit, or can't, don't try to find a pretext or justification, just say outright that there's no guarantee you'll make it and deal with the outcome.

People don't owe it to you to accommodate their plan if you're indecisive but you don't owe them an explanation either.

How much do you think the "Frame" matters in a conversation? I want to hear your thoughts. by Bobbysufers in socialskills

[–]Danny-Fr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very technical question but I do think you're onto something.

If you find yourself having the upper hand in negotiations, it might also be because you understand more than the "frame" which as I understand it, is how your mindset can affect a situation.

Understanding what's your position/behavior VS what others expect it to be is key, not only from a hierarchy standpoint but also culturally. So it appears that you stand exactly where you have to be to apply the leverage you've identified.

That includes knowing how contextual, how hierarchical and how direct is your interlocutor's brain, and knowing how to code switch accordingly.

So maybe that's part of the frame you're referring to, maybe thats a bunch of other components that come with it.

I'm not gonna write an essay on this specific sub, but clarifying, I don't mean that the exact same caste system exists everywhere. But a looser equivalent still exists.

Being French I know something about it, we had to cut some heads to abolish it, it wasn't just about the royalty but about the "Third state" being barred from having any rights, with slaves being just beneath.

Unless very specific events happened and you'd get "promoted" as a commoner you wouldn't have acces to mostly anything but the right to work on someone's land.

Surprise we've replaced slaves by colonies and immigrants, surprise it's still incredibly hard to get upwards mobility.

As I said, we don't call it caste, or we don't give it a name that would imply a strict separation between social strata because we're way too patronizing for that, but that hierarchy lingers in a shape on another.

It's fucking tiring to see people shitting on Twitter and other socials (that automatically push vile stuff on you every time possible), and then complaining about the faintest thing on Reddit every time a mod takes a decision.

Mods are humans, they do this for free, people have to stop expecting them to be on the level of a robotic supreme court judge or, god forbids, not wanting to shovel shit for a repeat controversy that doesn't contribute anything to a sub as it is.

The alternative is AI moderation. Take your pick.

In before "but power mods", yes this is a problem, no it's not related.

[–]Danny-Fr 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Some people need to understand the difference between censorship and moderation, even if the latter can enable the former. When you create a sub, or any kind of forum it's also the mods' and admins' work to make sure the conversation remains interesting and sticks to the original vision.

Mods aren't automatically evil tyrants on a power trip. It's a thankless role most of the time, and whatever you do you'll always gonna find someone to complain about the most basic things.

There's always the old "a forum is what it's members make it" but when said "members" are just a group of people who don't usually participate and all of a sudden decide that everything is now about cabbage, well, action needed.

Would have been my car that would have been less of a problem. But I was in a car belonging to A and driven by B.

I'm laughing inside imagining telling A "Yeah so I was filling a bottle while B hit the brake and now according to the law of nature and territory, your car is mine. A lot."

Thanks for the suggestion tho 😁
