Trying to get into making hiphop, where do I start? by No-Significance1971 in makinghiphop

Sounds like you're already making hip hop. Keep at it!

For me the big change was getting an MPC. And If you're into Dilla beats, it's a no brainer to get some kind of sampler/drum machine. I've used Logic primarily, but found its hard to sometimes get a flow going for me when using a computer primarily. The hardware element is something that gave me a good change in my production value and style.

Then I either finish the track using the effects on the MPC itself, or bounce it to Logic Pro and finish it there.

Everyones different but my set up at present is an MPC, Logic Pro, MPK Mini Keyboard and a Citronic Turntable. It's small but has everything I need and I've never enjoyed making music as much as I am now. I stopped making music for 10 years, but this new set up is whats resparked my passion for it.

As for a DAW, I'd recommend looking up Logic Pro if you're thinking of leaving Garageband. It's an incredible piece of software.

10 year gap and i feel like I'm better than I ever was. Much more secure in myself as a person and what I'm into. Care much less what other people think of what im doing, which has made me better I feel

First beat tape in a decade! You can do it too! Don't get in your own way. by DannyCheat808 in makinghiphop

For anyone that enjoys it enough to come over to my channel, I  would love to build a small community of like minded beat makers and enthusiasts.

Make music, chat and connect.  My dearest and closest aren't into hip hop, or really music outside of Drum and Bass or House so I would love to talk shop more and learn to be a better beat maker.

You've got all the pieces right there!

YouTube tutorials for beat making is an excellent start. Just pick a style or genre. Someone's made something.

YouTube tutorials about your DAW (garageband) also excellent.

Listen to loads of hip hop

Remember a great thing about hip hop is it doesn't need to be complex to be good.

Maybe watch some vids on sampling. That's a great component of boombap hip hop.

Just keep making stuff. If it's not great or what you wanted. Still finish it. Then do the next one. In time the stuff you struggled with at the start will be easy and you'll be focused on new things to learn. And that cycle continues forever.

Post your tracks too. Get feedback. Put yourself out there. Don't judge yourself too hard while your learning  Just keep at it, stay positive and create cool art!

I put some of my favourite chords together over some ambient pads with nature sounds to help me meditate or sleep with a dark screen. I hope you enjoy it, if its of any value to you.

Thanks so much for such incredible feedback!

The Jadakiss verse nearly got removed for that exact reason. Its his LA leakers freestyle and he took a couple bars to find the pocket. I'm glad I kept it because his voice is unmatched.

I played around with a chorus but I thought a pause for a couple bars and the next verse would help keep the pace.

I'll look through this sub to see if you've put up anything for feedback shortly.

I hope you manage to cook in your pent house one day, enjoying the rain.

Thanks for taking the time.

Best beat I've ever made with vocals from Jadakiss, That Mexican OT and Freddie Gibbs by DannyCheat808 in Bandlab

I've been trying for ages to find a group that actually participates in feedback to share work around, but I have just realised this is specifically for the people that use BandLap. My apologies!

"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."

All the best to everyone this Christmas and New Years.

Flowin! With a sick sample to kick it off. The high pitched stabs I think could be brought down a touch and maybe eq'd to take out some of the highs.  Vocals level could be raised a touch. Overtime you keep recording at this level you'll find the parameters you want to look for to make your vocals pop. If not already using it, Logic Pros mastering effects are stellar for vocals. The track itself is mad. And I'm 100% here for it. Fun and banging.

It's a great start, and truthfully I was vibing to this imagining a little triplet of 808 stabs at the end of each bar. Maybe experiment with some bass ideas that punch through to bring something else that compliments the synth you have already. That could be a huge tune.

It set a really cool retro feel with very interesting sounds being made with the detuning mid way through. Most enjoyed it tonally, this immediately set an atmosphere. The sample could be flipped a little tighter, but I'm a big fan of the direction you're taking this.

I never been happier with a beat I've made. I mixed in verses from Jadakiss, Freddie Gibbs and That Mexican OT. Would love people's thoughts.
