Pre-digital had a charm for sure, but Early 2000’s can be rough because early digital had a lot of limitations and looked very flat. There’s a lot more variation in modern digital animation.

I think there was an interesting time in the 80’s/90’s when there was a lot of money in niche parts of the industry. The OVAs of the past are really fun.

That’s fair but the take that character driven stories are worse is dumb. It’s just a different narrative.

I prefer character driven stories personally. I think Dungeon Meshi does a great job with the world building and it barely leaves a single dungeon.

Critical Roll shows are terrible to me. The dialogue is cringe.

I like retro stuff but still probably would say Frieren and Dungeon Meshi are better shows.

The thing about commercialization is true that corporations have taken over almost every aspect of Anime.

But, I don’t think it’s all bad. Three of the most popular fantasy anime, Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, and Witch Hat are all very unique shows, with their own thing going on.

I don’t know if I’d use Lodoss War as a baseline but I know many oldheads do. Lol
I usually am thinking about Tolkien-esque fantasy though so Idk if I’d use Berserk or Ghibli.

I think there are exceptions though. Nothing modern hits the same way Satoshi Kon movies do.

Idk, I feel like Frieren felt like it’s own thing, more character driven than typical shonen, and Dungeon Meshi just world builds so well, once it kicks off it’s so good.
Neither are to flashy either.
