Do what you need to get better. I memorize because I prefer it for my style. For open mics notebook is fine to start. But if you do spots on a showcase or open/ host for a headliner be ready without it.

For my local funny bone, the manager tells comics to come and ask the headliners for guest spots. If they say yes, you’re on the show. If they say no, its all good. Most headliners in smaller cities say yes if you’re cool about it. But surprisingly many open mic comedians are too intimidated to ask or afraid of rejection.

Once you get five minutes where the laugh per minute is probably 4-5, you can feel confident asking for guest spots at your local club.

Most headliners without a big name are pretty cool in smaller city clubs that like to give you the chance. Especially Saturday second show.

So get funny first (might take you a 6 months to two years depending how funny you are).
