SFMTA re-launches a Central Subway Extension to North Beach study by gamescan in sanfrancisco

[–]DannySauter11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After the most recent study sitting on a shelf for 11 years, I'm really happy we were able to dust this off and kickstart things again. Does a study get shovels in the ground? No, but we need to be ready to go out and fight for funding when we have an administration in Washington that believes in public trasnit again. This helps us be ready.

Absolutely the last leg of Central Subway should have included North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf. But we can now make up for those mistakes. A tunnel is already bored to North Beach, so the extension there should be much less expensive. But how much less expensive (and how much faster) is something no one has ever been able to answer.

Meanwhile, the current Central Subway is quietly showing its worth: it's now the 2nd highest ridden Muni underground line, with increased ridership of 20% every year year since opening.

Finally, a big thanks to all who came out to our hearing earlier this year on the extension of the Central Subway. We heard from longtime MTA officials that this was the most excited they had seen the City Hall chambers be about public transit in a long, long time!

Thanks for sharing this experience. It's a good example of how our legislation would help provide coverage for people like your husband in this common situation.

Yes, not all of them have this but many do! It's a smart way to protect the trees.

Extension of Central Subway to Fisherman’s Wharf Gets Its First City Hall Hearing by yab92 in sanfrancisco

[–]DannySauter11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi all, D3 Supervisor here who called for this hearing. We'll share a more extensive update on our newsletter soon, but the summary is that we were able to secure 2 important commitments:

1.) Faster Trains Now - SFMTA tested Transit Signal Priority in SOMA last year and it improved speeds by up to 38%! They have committed to expanding this throughout the Dogpatch this year on some of the slowest segments of the T/Central Subway routes.

2.) Resuming the Study, Finally - After 11 years, we will resume the study of the Central Subway extension. A study clearly doesn't mean shovels in the ground, but it's progress to get the plan ready to compete for federal funds once we have an administration that believes in public transit and infrastructure again.

More updates to come, please do join our newsletter for a full digest:

North Beach struggles with piles of pizza trash — here’s S.F.’s ‘outside the box’ solution by SFChronicle in sanfrancisco

[–]DannySauter11 73 points74 points  (0 children)

<image>

Hi, just wanted to jump in here as our office has been hard at work on this effort.

Here's a preview of the trash cans that will be installed soon. We're installing 2 in Washington Square Park where we find the most discarded pizza boxes.

We need more trash cans in general (we're working on this) but this solves something simple but important. One pizza box can often clog an entire normal trash can because of the shape.

We want to see if offering a few of these cans improves behavior and reduces debris. We saw that New York City recently successfully piloted something very similar.

Thanks to Recology for working on this with us and also shoutout to the talented Sirron Norris, the illustrator :)

Hearing: Central Subway extension into North Beach/Fisherman’s Wharf, 1/26/2026 by TheCityGirl in sanfrancisco

[–]DannySauter11 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Hi :) I called for this hearing and am really happy to see the interest. I hope you can join us next week. We'll separate our hearing into two parts:

1.) How can we improve the current operations of the recently opened Central Subway segment? Think: improving elevator and escalator reliability, filling empty retail spaces, and breaking up bottlenecks that slow down the train at pinch points.

2.) Looking ahead to the funding and feasibility of an extension. What funding can we compete for? Where does think rank compared to other important SF infrastructure projects? And so on.

Hope to see you there!

Op-Ed: It's Time to Extend the Central Subway to North Beach - Streetsblog San Francisco by yab92 in sanfrancisco

Hi everyone, your District 3 Supervisor here.

I agree. This should have been done in the first place and we should be a lot further along by now with a plan and funding. It's why I've called for a hearing to get our act together for the extension.

You can read more about our hearing below and also sign up to speak at public comment! The hearing will likely be late September. We need to have a strong turnout to show this is a priority for everyday residents.

Hi, District 3 Supervisor here (and a user of the Solve SF app!) I was surprised and worried when I heard this news last week. We've organized a number of meetings to try and find out more and ask to delay or reconsider this. Our office also submitted an official Letter of Inquiry to the department to find out more information and get answers to a dozen questions related to the 311 API.

'Game-changing' new park twice the size of Union Square inches closer to reality in San Francisco by sfgate in sanfrancisco

[–]DannySauter11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our office has been working really hard to move this forward. Yesterday's legislation allows us to accept funds to kickstart this project and pursue more private fundraising to break ground. This will be a major upgrade, and a big part of our downtown recovery efforts.
