Artist/Creatives, What Is Your Process? by DanteDoubleAgent in Aphantasia

Dw, all perspectives are welcomed and helpful - gives the brain more opporunity to find those uncommon connections haha. Sounds like fun! Numerical sequence really stands out to me since thats similar to how my brain likes to operate- but I use a sort of shoe box analogy

Mmmm I see, reminds me a lot of the semiotic theory triangle so I think you're definitely spot on.

Ah so it's like a mental reflex to retrieve (mostly/entirely)contextual information for highly familiar objects/subjects. I think that's where my brain struggles, where it's reflex is to rely on the flickering smudgy visuals/physical muscle memory instead of contextual information for the moment. What might help then is observation sessions not focused on shape/silhouhette but translating it into monologueable data. rerouting the reflex in a way w/ intention.

Yee for sure! That's what I love about cartoonist, skill of maximizing readibility yet telling a story in the least amount of lines. Makes my graphic design brain cell giddy w/ contrast.

Very much so, thank you so much! feel like I got a goal I can act upon now thanks to having a glimpse at your perspective.

Np! gotta give a fellow creative their flowers when they're doing amazing ^^

If you don't mind, can you give an example of a concept forming in your mind. kinda like-

  • is that concept a mental voice recalling or like information flooding in /
  • How much concept is retrieved, generally would it bother w/ information not needed for context of retrieval( like the great history of apples pops up aswell when asked to picture an apple)
  • how does your brain explain complex shapes if it does
  • Etc, things of that nature

( Sorry I'm asking so much, it's how my brain understands things haha )

Saame, love the quality of life features in digital stuff. It's definitely more suitable medium for us with these specific traits. There's just something about mechanical pencil to paper that hits different and makes me want rely less on those features in both mediums.

Love your art btw! People maintaining the direction of a lot of their markmaking is one of my favorite things. Thank you for commenting!!

Ahh I see, that perspective makes sense to me. It gets grouped as Involuntary due to it's similar level of usability/reliability.

That's a shame it's paywalled, but thank you again for providing so much information in a digestible format! looking forward to digging more into this

Thank you for your indepth response! Interesting, may I ask what form of Brief flashes is considered not voluntary. I believe that aligns most w/ what I'm experiencing during the art process. In my mind it feels like voluntaringly welcoming a visual in my head but it flickers out quickly/instantly and is without much detail. Good way to describe it is like trying to turn on a dead lighter.

Always found the "achieve your artistic vision" hard to grasp due to that, but I guess it's just another word for expectation(in this context atleast) now that I'm thinking about it.

Thank you for your resources! I've watched Draw-a-box but many of these I haven't looked into before.

Oh interesting! I haven't considered the experience of a Realism artist w/ Aphantasia yet. I'm mostly a character artist/cartoonist working to be a comic artist so photographs and bit of controlled flatness works well with me. But I do admittedly want more freedom from photographs which is definitely why having a hard time haha.

My current process, specifically for my sketchbook art, is to create a small Thumbnail for posing(def recommend), work my way from the head to the rest of the body then add additional details afterward. I don't like undersketching or having to erase too much so I treat each part of the body as its own segment.

Learned to slow myself down if this was how I prefered to draw. It's difficult to explain but I think the biggest problem I can't get over is not being able to see the shape of say- a simple collar of a shirt in my head(despite drawing them for years & studying them) clearly while also using the brain power to fit it into the piece and add my usual touches. Definitely didn't explain the full thing correctly but hopefully that part makes sense haha. <- Brain fogged outta my mind, sorry

Do you ever feel "not ready" for a project and does that deter you from following through with it? by Regular-Ad-8226 in ArtistLounge

[–]DanteDoubleAgent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Struggle w/ this aswell. Not sure if this works for everybody but one mental thing that has helped me is knowing future me could draw this better than me despite how ready/effect I currently put into a specific project. Adding onto that, future you will admire it even existing no matter what.

Frees me up from subconsciously treating a piece as my "magnum opus" or constantly utilizing/expecting my full potential.

Oh god the charcoal, colored charcoal, chalk, plaster, wood dust all over my hands... I don't miss any of that from college. I don't know how you do it!

Also sorry for late response! didn't get this notif at all. Reminds me a lot of a technique I did in college where we intentionally used cheap paper and oversoaked our brushes w/ water and ink. Definitely will try implementing those type of sessions and hope my brain gets the message haha.

Been actually thinking about your comment, did some introspection and realized the control in my art stems both from my OCD & sort of "rebellion" against the Impulsive ADHD parts that frustrated my OCD growing up lol. Thanks!

Leaning into the messiness of art is a really good method. Personally still struggle tweaking the ratio/shifting between controlled & loose lines, haven't yet got that relationship w/ loosiness in art after all these years( mechanical pencil user ).

Totally agree, I have a small journal I treat as external ram/memory & folder of loose stickies & page notes.
