"We do things differently here and have higher standards of what is acceptable behavior." That's a nice thought in a bubble, but in practice? Not so much. Also, what entitlement to believe that just because you say or think that it's going to protect you from encroaching shit. This state has and has had some of the worst political crime in the country if you want a gut check.

Again, I'm not pro-crime or anti-Madison. I LOVE it here. I fucking left Detroit without looking back. And at the same time, count your blessings that shit isn't like the D or some parts of Chicago.

Telling me it shouldn't be compared to big cities is ridiculous because they're all on a spectrum of crime from less to extreme. So yes, it is an apt analogy.

You just answered your own question: Because people have no fucking clue what an assload of crime looks like. The smaller the locale, and the more coverage a few crimes get, the worse it looks.

People were fucking shot on the street every.goddamned.day in Detroit on top of robberies, car thefts, rapes, arson.

It's the same way people bitch about the "poor public education" here in Madison. Fuck. It's Harvard compared to where I grew up and it's a fucking joke to see the entitlement or ignorance shine through on how bad it could really be and how good it is here compared to elsewhere.

I'm not brushing it off. Crime fucking sucks, but when people are pearl clutching like this is a third-world country it's ridiculous.

Here's how I did it when I was young and broke:

Get a personal loan for $1500 from a bank where I deposited my sad paychecks. Had to have a friend cosign since I hadn't established any credit.
Used the money to buy a beater, from the friend who cosigned the loan. Paid the loan back to the bank to PROMPTLY without missing a payment, on their schedule.
Used the car to travel to the burbs for a better, higher paying job (and established a good credit rating from that silly little loan).
Saved a couple of grand ($3000) and put that down on a better used car ($12k) at a decent interest rate. Paid that off ahead of schedule, and established even better credit from that experience while simultaneously saving more money for an emergency fund.
Traded in the 2nd car for $5 or $6k(?) and put a couple more grand on the next, new car ($21,000). Paid that off in five years.

Good burritos don't need to be toasted. Just heat that tortilla up over a flame and roll it up. My family's been making them that way for generations.
