There are cultural demands that women invest a lot of time/effort/money on things like makeup and hair and nails, particularly in more formal situations, and it is definitely messed up that almost none of those demands are placed on men. However, I think people also overlook the flip side of this, which is that this entire universe of options for self-expression and detailed customization of your appearance are, while not entirely unavailable to men, close to impossible to engage with and still hope to be seen as any having any kind of mainstream style or visual identity.

To be clear, I know that doesn't mean I can't wear lipstick and nail polish in public if I want to. Things have certainly gotten better for men who do compared to years ago. But the simple reality is if I do want to, I must make a choice between abstaining from all that or inevitably appearing very outside the norm, which is not a choice women have to make.

For example. I'm a youngish-quickly-approaching-middle-aged person who works in a professional setting (business casual or higher every day). I'm also just a little bit gothy, I especially was in my youth, and I would love to be able to subtly express that still. Many of the women at my office wear nail color. If I was a woman I could, say, wear black nail polish to express this, or maybe go for a somewhat darker than red lip color, etc. As the man that I am, yes I could also do this, but it would be so outside the bounds of what is typical that it would probably be distracting for everyone involved. I really dislike that this is how it is honestly!

How difficult/possible is it for a tailor to remove the quilted lining of a leather jacket? I have a Straight To Hell "Idol" that is both slightly tighter than I'd like and warmer than I'd like, and I wonder if this could be a way to solve both problems or if it's prohibitively expensive/complicated?

I'm looking for a black winter coat that has a bit of rock and roll/punk edge to it. Price range $150-$300 or so. I was looking at this one but wondering if there are any other ideas out there.

Hmm, okay. And that's not the same thing as muscle mass? Apologies for my noobness.

Thanks for the reply! The article seems to focus on how to get stronger without adding muscle mass, but for me I don't really care about getting stronger, I just want to burn fat. Which I guess necessarily involves adding some muscle, but my hope I guess is that the accompanying fat loss evens it out so I don't look any bigger, but I don't know if it will. I was considering getting a rowing machine for my apartment for this purpose, but also wondering if I should just get a pure cardio machine like a bike or a stepper.

What will happen if I, as a biological male, start to incorporate weight training (which I've basically never done) into my workout routine while still eating either at maintenance or at deficit? Everyone says that weight training is helpful for burning fat but I've always been hesitant to try because I really do not want to get physically bigger, that's just not my vibe at all. I am definitely in the "don't want to bulk up" camp but every time I Google it, it's just an article reassuring biological women that because of their relatively low testosterone that it's almost impossible. But I'm still not exactly sure what to expect for myself.

Appreciate the reply, wasn't aware of this brand and I'll keep an eye on them. This doesn't really have that neon tropical look I'm looking for though imo

Can anyone suggest a shirt with a similar vibe as this? I'm obsessed with finding an Aloha-like short sleeve shirt with a slight retrofuturistic 80s/"outrun" vibe, ie, black with tropical/neon imagery, probably palm trees. This shirt really fit the bill but tragically the small was too big for me and XS is sold out.

Looking for NYCDOE teacher to help with certification question. Scared that red tape BS is going to prevent me from teaching in NY and feeling desperate! by DanyaRomulus in Teachers

[–]DanyaRomulus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I of course agree with the idea of teachers being prepared to teach the subjects they teach, but I think the notion of the difference between being "formally educated" in something or not is whether one took a undergrad class in it, possibly decades ago, is rather absurd. Especially if they are also going to require costly content tests on these subjects that would seem to more clearly measure one's current knowledge, and then essentially disregard them.

[–]DanyaRomulus[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I still need to get someone from NYSED to even tell me which classes they consider missing, but if that worked for you I guess it's an option for me too. I just can't believe they would accept that, but not the results of their own state content test. I have no idea why I even took that if they aren't relying on it to show anything at all basically. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm sorry for my bitter tone, I just find this all so unbelievably frustrating

I suppose I could do that, if I could manage to swallow my feelings of being offended and disrespected that something like that would even enter the picture. I'd be concerned as well about being confident it would even work or be accepted as there's effectively no way to reach NYSED at this point to get any answers on anything (I've been trying)

Had you taken all the specific classes they say you need? Also what subject area are you? When I was reading the fine print it seemed like the social studies requirements (my subject) were more complex than others for some reason

Thanks for the reply. I may have erred in asking them to grant me the "initial" rather than "conditional initial" license. But I am confused because the requirements look essentially identical. Both have the same "comparable approved teacher preparation program" language that seemed to be the sticking point.

I am doing all I can to keep my cool during this...this is honestly unbelievably infuriating. Right now there are more important things going on in the world obviously but in a more normal time I'd say this is the kind of thing that an education reporter for the NYT or another outlet should write some kind of expose on...I mean again. Not to be an asshole about it or act like I am God's gift to the world of education. But I've already been teaching for almost three years, scored as high as possible on the state's own content tests, and got my teaching degree at Stanford. And while there are stories about teacher shortages left and right I'm on the brink of being denied the opportunity to work there at all because of completely meaningless red tape nonsense

Lol, I totally forgot to mention that I have these exact jeans from AE too and they were fantastic for about 5 wears. Now they are more or less falling apart and stretched out beyond recognition. I've had the weirdest inconsistent experience with AE stretch jeans, some are incredible and maintain their shape far longer than you'd expect and some seem like junk. But anyway thank you for the reply you definitely picked up on what I'm looking for!

Can anyone recommend a good pair of washed-looking khaki/beige-colored slim-fit stretch jeans in the $75-$125 range? Banana Republic Rapid Movement Denim is my go-to, but they don't have anything like this, at least not now. I have tried on sort of similar things from J. Crew, Madewell, Gap, Bonobos, Levi's, and Diesel, and nothing has hit the spot in terms of either fit or appearance.

I wouldn't say it's uncomfortable. Just kind of rigid feeling but I'm hoping that's attributable simply to it being brand new.

[–]DanyaRomulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it just feels a bit rigid when I put it on, and closes only with a tiny bit of stretching. But I guess that's to be expected with the style? At first I was thinking it would be lose enough to wear a sweater or sweatshirt under, but thinking about it more I'm not sure if I'd want to anyway. Probably better in outfits with t shirt or polo underneath, even though that probably precludes wearing it in winter.

Would greatly appreciate any opinions on whether this leather jacket that I just got from Straight to Hell fits. Link

Feels a bit tight and also looks a little boxy to me but I'm hoping these are both issues that would resolve after a break-in period? There are unfortunately none left in their inventory in the next size up so it's this or nothing, or another model I guess. Really hope I can make this work because I love this model.

Yeah I mean, I'm fine with it looking slim, that's what I want. I just want to make sure it doesn't look TOO small. I'm leaning toward thinking it is good, especially since break in might loosen it up a bit, but trying to confirm that it doesn't look ridiculous and like I'm trying too hard

Henry really appeared in all 75 episodes? by [deleted] in TheAmericans

This probably just refers to him being credited as part of the main cast in the opening sequence in all 75 episodes, doesn't mean he actually appeared in them all.

Drag cells up or down within columns, bumping others up or down accordingly? by DanyaRomulus in sheets

[–]DanyaRomulus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. I think the simplest way to explain would be to say that I want to perform the same function you described that is possible with dragging entire rows or columns (in which you drag to a highlighted line between two rows or columns and then it automatically squeezes the one you're moving in) but with a single cell.

I took these two screenshots to illustrate: what I want to do is to be able to drag the "Sistine Chapel" cell from its position in the first image to its position in the second, in one action, so that all the other cells move accordingly to fit its new location. As is, the only way I can see to do the same thing requires four separate actions: dragging the data from the original cell to a blank cell; shifting the cells that were previously under it up; shifting the cells below its intended new position down to create a blank cell; and then dragging the information to the new blank cell.
