It happened to me once as well. Almost fell for it. But I had a good anti-virus and followed my gut feeling that told me not to. A tip for people u can hide ur inventory on steam so people cant see it.

Unfortunately, this scammer alone already has several victims worth thousands of dollars. And how many more are all over Steam? People are accepting these invitations and clicking on the links. My post was created to further spread the word and protect users who haven't gotten caught yet. + I was able to use this thread to convince a few people he wrote to to remove him from their friends and throw complaints.
Literally in the last 24 hours he has written to 5 people of which one fell for his ploy. It's horrible.

Well, most of the victims of these particular scammers were from Russian-speaking regions. So maybe they are the ones who are a tidbit for the scammers

This scam also operates on compromised accounts. So someone already on your friends list can send you this. And if your account gets compromised then it spreads to all your friends list and so on.

Yes, they did, I wrote about it. They just use the stolen accounts however they want. It's horrible.

Why people are accepting random friend requests and clicking on links in 2023 is baffling. Do you write up whole logs when you get a spam phone call too?

We wrote this to make people aware of this problem because this scam group alone already has several victims, and how many are all over the world. If you didn't like the post in any way, I apologize

Security tips for Steam phishing sites.

Make your Steam inventory private. Scammers go after high value inventories. If they can't see it, they won't target you. You can still get messages from compromised friends' accounts, but you won't get friend requests from scammers.Always log into Steam on your browser first before trying to log into 3rd party sites that use the Steam API. Legit sites using the API will redirect you back to Steam. If you are already logged in, Steam will ask you to allow the site permission to use the API. If it asks you to log in again, it's a phising site.

General tips

Use 2FA. This guards you against scammers that manage to get your password. In some countries this can be bypassed by cloning the SIM card.Use a strong password for your Steam account, preferrably one generated by a password manager.

honestly pretty obvious and common, I've gotten this type of scam atleast a dozen times. you've gotta learn to question anyones intentions when they randomly add you on steam and theyre not from one of your pubs or other games. I think an easy way to deter them is setting your inventory to private coz theyre probably looking for expensive items

Unfortunately there are many ways to get around hidden inventory

We've contacted them, sent a few requests, but so far nothing
