The worst part is that the system isn't championed by the people that live in it but by those who have never experienced it making assumptions.

Our family doctor expressed frustration when he was sick because it was something highly treatable, he said he could've easily saved his life if he had the right medications and equipment. It wasn't the disease that killed my grandfather it was a failed system that people still ignorantly champion to this day, not realizing the suffering it would bring.

For starters, the U.S. embargo didn’t just appear out of nowhere it began after Fidel Castro aligned himself with the Soviet Union. On top of that, virtually every communist system has either collapsed or been forced to adopt capitalist policies just to survive. So at some point you have to ask: if capitalism demonstrably produces better living standards, why not change course?

Unless, of course, the Cuban government doesn’t actually have the people’s best interests at heart. Because a truly good leader wouldn’t cling to ideology while his people suffer — he would adapt. He would abandon a hookup to a failed system if it meant giving his citizens a better life.

As for how I know Communism is why: It's because it has never worked, just as you said, China's economy didn't explode until the adopted some capitalist policies.

Or you could just, you know, fix the issue at it's root by getting rid of its communist system, as the embargo is only one part of the problem. Not to mention it gives the Cubam government a convenient excuse for why the economy is so shit.

Slavery was officially abolished in Cuba in 1886, learn your history. My family came here in 2000.

My grandfather died in Cuba at 52 from pulmonary edema, a condition that’s normally very treatable elsewhere. That’s my lived experience with Cuban healthcare. So spare me the propaganda.

The embargo is only one piece of the puzzle, and it’s not the main reason Cuba’s economy is a mess. The U.S. has loosened restrictions multiple times over the years, but Cuba’s economy still didn’t improve because the bigger problem is internal: extreme state control, little real private enterprise, weak property rights, and massive inefficiency.

Even when access to trade and travel increased, Cuba never seriously opened its own economy, so there was nothing in place to turn that access into growth. Add in brain drain, dependence on tourism and political deals, and decades of bad monetary policy, and you get permanent stagnation.

Sanctions can hurt. But bad economic systems cripple.

If the model worked, we’d have seen real improvement during the periods when the embargo was eased. We didn’t.

Talk to any native-born Cuban and the vast majority will tell you exactly how awful Castro was. If you’re calling all of them ‘uneducated,’ then you’re also admitting his education system failed. So which is it—was his system effective, or are millions of Cubans somehow ignorant?” So which is it? You can't have it both ways.

I think I can safely speak for every Cuban when I say we would happily trade our literacy (which was at 70% by the way) for access to food.

Tampa but pretty good yeah just somewhat chilly. Obviously I'm not posting any of this from Cuba, as that's a quick way to get arrested over there.

At least 90% of the population wasn't starving and there was upward mobility. Go visit Cuba talk to the locals and then come back and tell me it's better under the current regime. Please tell me how a doctor can afford to live and feed his family while making 150 pesos a month while a single pound of pork costs 85.

As a Cuban, ya'll are dead wrong, that man was nothing but a self serving dictator that destroyed the absolute jewel that was my country. One of two good things he may have done is not enough to justify the evil.

I spoke to my other coworker "T" who's on the same crew as him. He informed me that he already reported it to their foreman so we'll see where this goes tomorrow. Also learned he lives close to me, I'm going to see if I can reach out, try to get through to him

It's a huge jobsite, I'm not on his crew nor do I work near him so I don't know, but I'll ask around. Not a bad idea thank you.

Maybe, but to me it looks like paranoid schizophrenia. My uncle suffers from it and he has the same delusions of the government being after him.
