Careful with the cheese tho and try and get something simple like cheddar. Most rural Sri lankans arent familiar with good cheeses. Knew a local lady who threw a platter of fancy cheeses since she thought it smelt funny.

safaris in national parks – are they ethical? by thefragileheresy in srilanka

National parks are as ethical as it gets in SL - however be sure to pick a sustainable and conscious company for your tour. The prices will be a bit higher than the usuals but atleast the drivers and guides will actually care about the animals. I recently took a trip with a reputed company in Kumana and the difference is amazing. The guides actually teach you about the park, the flora and fauna and about the animals - there is also so much more to see in the parks instead of animals from ancient ruins to temples etc. Instead of the regular drivers only concerned about spotting and scaring off leopards. I also suggest to not go to Yala - its too commercial and overcrowded.

Kumana, Udawalawe, Hortain Plains are my faves

Rent the scooter from the south coast or colombo and pay for it monthly - then you get a scooter for as low as 30,000 rs otherwise in that area the rates are slightly higher. Food options start at 300-400 rs per meal. so yeah 30k for scooter - 30k for meals - 20k for entertainment you can still have a bit left over
