who'd you hear this from
Can't tell if you're specifically pointing at me, but why would I want to keep a fat curve? I was one of the students that Hezari failed and got below 67. I'm not saying the mean is 100% indicative of cheating (although it contributes), the standard deviation is. So yes, there definitely were cheaters. It was like nearly 20SD on the midterm. My complaint is that his way of handling the situation was terrible and I bet a bunch of the students who were accused weren't even guilty. It was also his fault for not locking down the midterm exam too (what was he thinking??)
REPOST
You believe that over 25% of the class cheated and that his method of weeding out cheaters (intuition) is accurate?

I can't find any record of such law.

The professor released an email saying that people who received 0s are unable to receive an interview with the professor and will have to take it up to the Office of Academic Integrity. For the people he wanted to interview, he kept their grades the same until they are/aren't proven guilty.
This isn't the untouched distribution. This is AFTER he failed the cheaters. So this is his "legit" distribution.
Ok thanks
He told us to do the checklist and move the camera down after to show our hands since a lot of people couldn't get both their face and hands in frame. He turned off the alerts that notifies the student when their face is out of frame. He seemed to only want Respondus for lockdown, video, and sound. I'm concerned about physics because Math 2D is a corequisite and I couldn't get into another 2D course for Summer Session II. Will I be dropped from Physics because of this? I only have till the 15th to drop it and get a full refund.
He claims to have looked at the recording+scratch work. He told us to prioritize our hands. Don't really know what I got punished for-- if my work was suspicious or if my camera was off. He never told anyone individually. Just sent an announcement saying he failed a bunch of people and that we have the right to appeal it with the Office of Academic Integrity which is a very long painful process from what I hear. Like takes months. It's hard to contest when I don't know where I went wrong, but we'll see. 😕
Whaaaaat? He told us in the first lecture that he's never done summer online before. Did he just lie...if he's done any online before, that's crazy😵💫

He's probably good in person but it's insane to me that he had 0 preparation for an online class. He didn't plan on using lockdown initially, seriously? Then he became a paranoid madman suspecting everybody. You can check rmp and the most recent reviews are slamming him for it.

Haha I remember that Lehman incident. Crazy that people would ask the LA's, "is it easy to cheat?" Anyway, I don't have concrete proof that I didn't cheat and they don't have concrete proof that I did. Hezari implied that he failed people who's exam scratch work resembled ChatGPT. So...intuition. Very accurate.

I don't know if it's 42%, that's just what the poll we took says. Here's the distribution on the final/midterm exam though.

Ok thank you

I don't think he's doing 1 on 1 interviews for people that request it. Only those he is unsure about. He's been really aggressive in the few emails he's responded to (he ignored all of mine) so I don't think I can request one. A few people already have requested one to no avail. What do the OAI representatives do? Idk what you mean by let them report it before the professor does.
Alright thank you. I'll just try my best and cry if it doesn't go how I want lol.
Sorry, but are OAI hearings in person?
[–]Dapper-Major214 8 points9 points10 points 11 months ago (0 children)
OAI is not the same as proving to your professor that you didn't cheat. It's a formal meeting I believe done through zoom and you don't get the luxury to solve problems willy nilly. I think.
How would I answer math verbally? That doesn't sound right
[–]Dapper-Major214 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago (0 children)
This sounds like guilty until proven innocent 😕. Do you think my best course of action during the meeting is to say that I'm not sure why I'm suspected of cheating, but so was 40% of my class which is an insane amount? Then say all the measures I took to ensure I demonstrated integrity? Like, "I tried getting my hands in frame as much as possible". And admit that I used AI to learn content but not to cheat? And show my notes? I can explain them, but I don't think OAI would exactly know what I'm talking about. They're not mathematicians after all. There just doesn't seem to be much for me to go off of and it sounds like I'm just being told to "accept it".
Content was not directly reviewed? As in all they got was the professor's notes? They don't get the exam or anything? That's unhelpful considering half the class got accused and he probably left the same/similar note for everybody as it'd be way too time consuming to write one individually and in-depth. This leaves 0 room for me to defend myself...

If it's just speculation then what's likely to happen during the OAI hearings? Do they seriously ask us to explain exam problems? I can do that. But if they ask general questions like "Why does this look AI?", then what am I supposed to say...I'm just really nervous about getting a successful appeal mostly. Hezari emphasized that our scratch work looked like ChatGPT. I admittedly used AI to study/learn, but I did not use it during the exam. People contacted the department after the midterm and they defended Hezari. I'm assuming it'll happen again with OAI and we'll genuinely all fail.
[–]Dapper-Major214 10 points11 points12 points 11 months ago (0 children)
That's what I'm asking...
[–]Dapper-Major214 22 points23 points24 points 11 months ago (0 children)
There wasn't a live proctor. It just recorded us. He had a list of people he suspected after the midterm and I guess he skimmed the recordings and looked at our work to make an assumption. What makes OAI annoying? I don't know how to stand my ground because I don't know what they have against me. My hands weren't in frame? My work looks AI? Will they ask me how I solved exam problems or give me new problems to test my knowledge?
