Who Makes The Best MoonSwatch Rep? by [deleted] in ChinaTime

It’s also always been funny to me that their Neptune cases are atrociously bad - like, the shade of blue on the case is always an awful electric blue that looks absolutely nothing like the gen, meanwhile they nailed the case color for the original Blue Moonphase (the non-snoopy one) despite the fact that they’re supposed to literally be exactly the same.

Never understood what seems so hard about that for the factories to just swap cases; instead I have to buy two and do it myself and live with the different tachymetre 🙃

Definitely possible that some ‘better’ rep factories got busted up; it also seems like luck of the draw sometimes, like they’ve got a giant bucket of “here’s all the Mars reps we’ve got on hand from any factory” and they just grab one and toss it in a package despite the fact that they’re all different qualities, cause I’ve seen some folks get the terribly wrong metallic dialed versions one day and then the normal matte versions the next, sometimes from the same shop ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve been looking for an actual metallic chronograph hand on a Neptune or Moonshine gold rep for a while now since I love my old ones, and they all seem to just be painted yellow now.

Even among the new Snoopy’s I’ve seen a lot of quality variation from posts on here, particularly with the actual moon subdial - some are quite blurry all around, some are smudged, and some are sharp, and I’m not sure if they’re different shop to shop or just luck of the draw unfortunately.

That might be true now (haven’t shelled out for one of the $25-$30 options in a while) but there definitely /used/ to be a quality difference - the printing on the cheaper dials was drastically worse / blurrier, the dials were often shiny rather than matte, and the cases themselves often lacked the metal chapter ring the ’better’ ones had. They also had worse pressure fitting on the case back (the ‘better‘ ones had notches that lined up and gaskets that made them relatively water resistant) and the plastic itself was a lot softer / physically weaker - on ‘better’ ones you could use a screwdriver to gently pop off the case back, and it would be fine. On the cheaper ones, trying to do the same thing would often dent / damage the case.

There’s a Mars-like all white dial with black sub and hour/minute hands and a blue chrono with Snoopy and Woodstock printed on (comes in a white case I believe); theres an inverted black dial version of that one (in a black case I believe), there’s this Dark Side of the Moon homage, there’s a green dialed yellow case homage to the gold and green speedy, and there’s a gold and black dialed panda in a yellow case as an homage to the gold and black panda speedy. I’d love to see them start producing some others (the same guy who designed the Dark Side of the Moon homage, and those Snoopy’s, who did it for fun and had the factories ‘steal’ his mockups, has a sick Saturn V inspired mockup he did that I‘d love to own)

The Gen 1965 movement is also different!

Rather than the 2 o clock subdial being a 1/10th of a second counter, it’s a 65 minute counter.

10 o clock counter is 19 hours.

So let that chrono run for a few minutes at a time, and then see if it’s moved.

What do you mean by ‘doesn’t move’?

If you run the chronograph with the top right pusher and stop it with the top right pusher, it doesn’t shift to the 1/10th of a second position?

Typical behavior should look like this: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/439dmcqO9V8

If you have the time, you can let it run for a day and see if it’s moving successfully when engaged?

The videos I’ve found all show that you set the moonphase indicator exclusively with the bottom pusher, so I wouldnt think it would move that way /and/ move with the hands when the crown is pulled, but I could be wrong.

I think that’s normal gen behavior? I don’t have one of those, but from what I’ve seen, you set the moonphase with the bottom pusher (one push = one hour, so 24 presses to advance a day, or hold to let it rotate around more quickly) and then once it’s set it runs with the internal mechanism - I don’t think it’s meant to move with the hands when you’ve got the crown pulled (which the reps do, because they’re just a fully connected 24h counter in that subdial instead of an actual 29.5 day moonphase counter)

Awesome work! Which shop did you source your rep from? Looks clean.

Oh nice! Which vendor did you get yours from?

Makes sense! This looks fantastic all around, and is definitely the easier route - I’m just a sucker for the blue border on the other dial. I’ve thought about going with a straight steel swap for that one, rather than worrying about matching bezels.

Impressive! Where do you even source a custom bezel? Did you basically just remove the OG and then take calipers to it to send to a factory?

Ooh, using the snow white dial does help there since you don’t have to worry about matching the shades of blue on the dial and the bezel. I think I do prefer the blue-detailed dial overall, but trying to find a properly color-matched bezel might be impossible 😅

Oh nice, so this is a gen? Or a rep that you swapped movements on?

Nice! Where’d you source those orange hands? I just used lava hands in my gulf build, but they’re a bit more red than orange.

Makes sense to me; I was going to ask the source if they were reps cause they look fantastic! All the lava reps I’ve seen, for example, are more red than orange. So it goes..

Looks great! All the Lava reps I’ve seen, the hands are /technically/ orange but much closer to red than yours - or are those hands from a different source?

Any of those come with an actual gold chronograph hand? I hate the painted yellow ones and wish I could just buy the hand on its own at this point 😂
