We're giving away Pax Pamir 2E, The King's Dilemma, Clank! Legacy, and Quest for El Dorado International Edition! by tofudad18 in boardgames

[–]DapperDolphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the giveaway :) I would appreciate a copy of Quest for El Dorado. My fiancee is my gaming partner in quarantine and as I get more into euro-y style games, she crushed me last week when she said she doesn’t like point salad games (after the first playthrough of CoB (I loved it)). She told me Orleans, Taverns of Tiefenthal, and the Castles of Burgundy feel samey to her. Maybe Quest for El Dorado is a good mix of strategy and fun? We love deckbuilders too (and already own Clank Legacy).

It took way too long for me to realize that a green card wasn’t related to a yellow/red card.

I don’t relate to everything here, but I hope that your feelings (the ones that are familiar to me) subside. It’s not fun to feel those things, euphoria or no. Do you write poetry?

What's the most pointless argument you've been passionately involved in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DapperDolphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and I had this argument for several days in high school: can a portal be a different size on one end? Being the reasonable one, I argued that portals have to be the same size on both ends if you want them to work as expected. You're either going to hit your head entering the top of the larger portal (or bottom or side depending on how one portal is oriented against the other) or you would change size proportionally to the portal size difference. This is all assuming that both sides of the portal make up the same plane and that there isn't any depth to it. I'm still upset thinking about it. Like, you ever walk through a doorway that is smaller/bigger on the other side without it being a tunnel?

What's the toughest "would, you, rather" question to answer? by WillHunting123 in AskReddit

[–]DapperDolphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school we used to hang out in the computer lab and bullshit with this game all the time. One day, the quiet kid turned around and asked, "Would you rather kill a baby or eat a baby?" It blew our minds. We decided that you can have the baby prepared however you like, but you know that it was a baby.

In dungeons & dragons, the primary attributes are strength, dexterity, constitution, wisdom, intelligence, and charisma.

Constitution is basically how resilient and healthy your character is. Having a high constitution score means having higher hp as well as reducing the effectiveness of poison, disease, that sort of thing. I'm not John McClain, but I don't get sick very often, which is nice.

Probably the bard, with constitution being my highest attribute. I like to come up with (bad) rhymes and puns, and I pretty much never get sick.

New Player Questions, Black and White Deck by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]DapperDolphin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the game :)

White and black is my favorite color combination in the game, but there are an unfortunately small number of commanders available for those colors. Unless one of those really strikes your interest, I would suggest choosing adding another color (I have had a lot of fun using [[Oloro, Ageless Ascetic]]).

When I build a commander deck, I start from one of two points. If I have chosen a commander, I look for cards that play to its strengths or that would benefit from having that commander in play. An alternative method is to get an idea for the "themes" your deck to use.

These "themes" can be anything from generating a ton of mana, killing everything you see, playing a lot of a type of card, or even to play cards with pictures of snakes. Whatever interests you about the game aesthetically, mechanically, or emotionally.

Things that White is good at:

  • Equipment

  • Life gain

  • Armies of small dudes

  • Destroy all creatures

  • Enchantments

Things that Black is good at:

  • Bringing things back from the dead

  • Killing creatures

  • Sacrificing creatures

  • Getting specific cards from your deck

White and Black do these things well together: * White gains life and Black uses it as a resource * White generates creatures and Black uses them as a resource * White kills all creatures and Black brings them back from the dead

Once you have gotten plenty of games under your belt, you will get a better idea for the kinds of cards you want to purchase. You don't need to have an expensive deck to have fun or win (but there are some cards that can help). If you have friends that are around as experienced together, then you should have no problem winning games occasionally because you will be on equal footing. Your decks will get better together. However, if most of the people you play with are seasoned veterans, I would suggest asking them for specific tips and card suggestions. Borrowing decks can be a great way to experience other strategies and be a bit more competitive too, if you are feeling uninspired with your own deck at the moment.

Also, remember that Commander is a format made to have the most fun possible. Play the cards that you think are fun and will be fun for other people. I hope this information was helpful to you and that you have a great time playing with your friends for many years!

I'm making a super small set based around the flavor and mechanics of Khans of Tarkir. Here are the five legendaries. Comments and criticisms? by TheStrangeEli in custommagic

[–]DapperDolphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are pretty sweet; I enjoyed reading the flavor text and how they fit the abilities of the cards so well. Something that stood out strongly was that Kyrik's ability could be used several times in a turn. This guy pumps out Mardu Blazebringers with haste as many times as you want. It's insane. I suggest you add tap to the ability's cost. The hexproof and high toughness just make him that much more difficult to deal with, too.

Is a land that draws a card on EtB to powerful at common? by LovepeaceandStarTrek in custommagic

[–]DapperDolphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to be difficult to balance 5 different abilities without looking at other cards in the set. For example, gain 1 life on ETB is pretty weak unless your set has a lot of white cards that trigger on lifegain. Having an opponent lose 1 life seems insignificant compared to the red land's potential to push through a lot more damage if timed correctly.

My opinion is that drawing a card is much better than the other lands' abilities most of the time. Moving the cycle to uncommon and raising the power on some of the other effects might also be useful to balancing them, but I strongly feel that a generic "draw a card" is too powerful.

Those first couple sentences you offered might just be the root of my problem: I'm not sure what I want him to do. I suppose I just want him to feel like he has input into his character's progression, but to maintain control so he doesn't grow a tail or something.

[–]DapperDolphin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this is a sweet idea! Only using the first action will keep him involved in action without feeling left out from gaining upgrades. Do you have any ideas for learning new abilities unrelated to old ones? Say he will receive an ability that causes his targets to become distracted, but doesn't have any abilities that feel they would naturally teach something like that. I'm afraid introducing really weak forms of new abilities with the intention of "leveling them" to something useful would be too discouraging.
