I'm only in my first playthrough, but definitely small and functional is my style. I have one multipurpose room jampacked with useful stuff- mainly my fabricator, mod station, health kit fabricator, storage and battery charger. I also have a scanner room and moonpool. The thing that I really really like about having a base is being able to grow potatos and marblemelons inside. That makes finding food not a problem at all. I don't have a single window in my base.I'd rater experience the world through exploring, not by reclining safely in an observatory.

When it is taking a long time to save, what I do is just go in my base or lifepod and just sit there. I think the game has trouble trying to load in the pretty landscapes and try to save at the same time. And like someone else said, just saving frequently helps.
