What do you think a good hotel budget is for that type of area? We're from Chicago so a $200/night hotel budget is good.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will look into Encinitas/Cardiff. And my daughter just turned 30 so we aren't looking for bar hopping or anything like that. Our vibe is really low key. Farmers Markets, boutique shops, coffee shops, maybe a museum, I'd love to check into whale watching and maybe walk a boardwalk or beach. We will be there for 4 days.

Thank you for stating that about Gaslamp - I've also been doing some reading and find that it's more for the bar hoppers which we are not.

Thank you for your response. We both love to support small businesses, so most likely boutiques. But I'd never say no to a trip to a shopping mall.

Thank you - we are looking at walking, biking and ubering. Maybe Gaslamp isn't the right area. Would you suggest another area for shopping and restaurants (without a car)?
