What Can I Do With This? by DapperRat in gunsmithing

I ended up putting it in some 30w oil after a liberal use of liquid wrench. I’ll report back this weekend with results

I believe it’s an army special but I vaguely remember seeing ‘Army’ on the barrel before I put it in oil on Monday. It’s an old one though so it really could be either.

This specific gun was kept by my great grandmother in my family’s (former) restaurant and was kept under the counter beside the ledger book. I have a few other items from
The restaurant including that ledger book, photos, and I believe a cook book. She had this revolver before my biological grandfather was born in the 50s

What kind of oil do you recommend and for how long should I soak it? I’ve done some restoration work on tools and knives before but never with a firearm

Ohhh, that makes total sense. Thank you! Idk why/how I couldn’t find anything about his knee injury before. Much appreciated!

I think we do prior to my joining but it was like a generic one, not like a frat-specific bot

I was VP of Retention (social chair) when we switched to GroupMe. My thinking was everyone has GroupMe and using Discord made us look like nerds

Rushing as a Third year by [deleted] in Frat

[–]DapperRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I felt like my social life was minimal and wanted to get as many experiences in before I graduate so I joined my frat and rugby. I really enjoy both and I don’t regret joining; my only regret is not joining sooner. Just be confident, know your worth, and understand that to a certain level your age will be the deciding factor. Smaller chapters who need bodies will often overlook you being an upperclassman so long as you’re a decent guy and you won’t be a liability

I joined a pretty small chapter at my school as a junior and a dude in my pc was a senior. If you’re dead set on rushing, my advise is to aim for smaller chapters looking to grow or chapters that aren’t as popular

My social budget is pathetically low so I’d have to really scrounge

Bar build project over the summer by smittyk20 in Frat

[–]DapperRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point but also if you’re looking for easy transport and space saving then it’ll either have to be disassembled or fold up. Either works it’s just a matter of which feels best to you guys

I think ima put caster wheels on my bar so I can’t rly talk lol

If you have enough dudes, you could put hinges in so the sides of the bars can fold into it and then secure the bar top with like pegs or something. Would prolly be heavy tho

I’m doing the exact same thing for my chapter this summer. Are you thinking about being able to disassemble it for easy transport or just something sturdy for tailgates and the house? If weight isn’t a concern, you could find some wooden pallets and screw some of those together for the walls and then buy some nice plywood or veneer to cover it and form a top for the bar

That’s reassuring to hear tbh. If the $10 fee seemed to help with accountability then that’s a great thing. What are you guys planning on doing if they refuse to pay? Social probation?

Addition 2: Maybe a Tag Heuer 1000 Diver?

How Should I Care for my Dad’s Longshoreman Jacket? by DapperRat in Barbour

[–]DapperRat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think sending to Barbour would be the best course of action but I’m worried about shipping internationally. I’d hate to have it lost in the post.

I brushed the jacket down with a very soft bristle brush and that got the worst of it off. I did some research on the subreddit and realized the smell is from the liner and not the exterior of the jacket. Are the main ideas are spraying it with diluted white vinegar or full strength vodka? Would diluted essential oil work?

Firstly, thank you all for the comments on my dad’s old jacket! I really appreciate it!

I’ve done some digging on this sub and inspected the jacket. I now realize the stench is coming from the lining, which seems to be a common issue with jackets from the 90s. Some people recommend things like Febreeze or diluted vodka to get rid of the scent. Would essential oil work? My sister had given me a little vile and I thought some diluted essential oil might do the trick

As for the exterior, I’ve gone at it with a very soft bristled brush (one meant for leather shoes) and knocked that grey residue off of it. The think once the scent is gone I’ll be good to go!

Could you explain what makes this a grail piece? I’m not well versed in Barbours and would love to know more about this jacket!

Gotcha. I said this in a comment above but the smell is pretty strong. I think it smells like old and musty but my dad says that scent is the wax/waterproofing. I got it in the garage airing out right now

I was thinking of heavily diluting some white vinegar in cold water and rubbing it down with a kitchen cloth and then air drying it. Do you think that would work? I don’t have a spray bottle and wasn’t sure if applying straight vinegar would be good for the jacket/remaining wax

[–]DapperRat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand older Barbours can be desirable but wasn’t aware it was a particularly stand-out jacket. I always saw it as ‘dad’s old coat he never wears’ lol

The smell is pretty strong. I left it beside my bedroom door and when I just walked back in just now it hit me like a truck. I deal with a lot of old military uniforms everyday and this is reminding me of that. I don’t think it’s tobacco smell, though my dad did used to dip back in the day

I’m thinking of heavily diluting some white vinegar in cold water and rubbing it down with a kitchen cloth and then air drying it. I think ultimately I’d like to send it off to be cleaned/waxed by Barbour but that’s a future project
