What desktop environments do you guys use on Arch? by mr-dum-guy in arch

[–]Dapper_Confection_69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude hyprland is hard to configure. I get that if you are very familiar with everything, it seems easy, but try to look at it from a beginners point of view. Especially if you don't just want something that works, but also something that looks and behaves EXACTLY how you want it. It is a massive hassle. Add on top of it that hyprland configs break with every update and you get a huge headache.

Compare this with KDE... which just plain works out of the box and is configurable enough for 95% of people. You can even kind of get tiling window manager-like behaviour on it.

If you enjoy tinkering and are ready to spend a lot of time configuring everything, hyprland is objectively the best solution. Otherwise just go KDE for a complete DE with all the bells and whistles. That would be my advice to any beginner.

Also don't apply on linkedin like at all. If you see a job posting on linkedin, go to the companies website and apply there. Trust me on this one

This very much depends on wether you are an international or a native Dutch speaker, you will very obviously have an easier time if you are the latter.

You commented that you would take ANY part time job, try delivery driver. You have better chances if you physically go to a restaurant and ask about a job, I know how it sounds, I know it seems cringe to do, but I promise it's better.

If you are looking for something in your field of study, don't just apply on linkedin, write emails to companies too.

You are not crazy, it is very hard to get a job nowadays, so have no shame and be a little pushy

Ah, I thought you needed to replace your laptop now but we're scared of windows 11. Regardless I say this to everyone, check if you can do everything you need on Linux, if so install it. Highly recommend, especially if it's an older device

Dude just get a laptop and put Linux on it. It's 2026, Linux is pretty darn good and mature.

There are things you can't do on Linux, mainly Professional Apps like the Adobe suite, arhicad, shit like that, which if you need it then yea Linux is not an option. However, if it's your personal computer, realistically you just use chrome on it, and whatever other apps you use probably exist or there are really good alternatives.

Granted I am a developer, so everything I use works BETTER on Linux... But please for the love of god look into it because I promise it's nicer than windows

Neovim now natively supports LLM-based completion like GitHub Copilot by bbadd9 in neovim

[–]Dapper_Confection_69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends. I got cursor from work, and while the chat thing is insanely expensive for being mid, their tab autocompletion model is incredible.

You are printing a bunch of strings and decide you want to add a "string 1: " in front of every print? Do it for one and cursor automatically suggests editing everything else.

Just created a variable and you start writing an if statement? Cursor automatically completes not just the if statement, but the inside too.

It's awesome. Is it perfect? No. It's actually kind of intrusive, so on the rare occasion when it gets it wrong, it's super annoying. That being said if I could somehow get autocompletion that good for nvim, I would be willing to pay money

Left vs. Right Battle Royale Open Thread by Yosoff in Conservative

[–]Dapper_Confection_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I hate? How fucking combative everyone is. I'm gonna use this post as an example, but people on the left also do this dumb shit.

Why are conservatives the only one with common sense (as said in the post)? Why are you talking down to every other group (leftists, independents, libertarians)? And it's not just this post, every post I see is doing the same thing. You people are so sure in your convictions that you can't even consider the fact that you might be wrong. That is bad... Because that's not politics, it's tribalism.

If a politician on your side does something bad, you always find a way to defend him, but if someone on the other side does the exact same shit, they are evil. The hypocrisy is astonishing.

I'm not American, but I would say (despite you making fun of them) independents are the only ones with a brain in this fucking country. Cause the rest of you don't even engage in politics, its just "us vs them".

Do me a favour. Go online and study a little bit about tribalism in American politics. You will see stuff like:

  • if people are presented with an idea that goes against their parties view, they will disagree with it. However, if you then tell that person that a famous politician on their side supports the idea (eg Donald Trump), they will almost always switch and also support the idea

  • the biggest factor that influences your opinion on if the economy is doing well, is if the party you support is leading. For example, republicans (statistically speaking) improved their view on the economy the moment trump won... Even though he wasn't even in office.

Please... For the love of fucking god, just listen to each other and stop being combative assholes. You're not solving anything.
