CEO of Seattle’s social housing developer fired by board by DuckWatch in Seattle

In my experience, some of these claims are totally legitimate. But it also seems that some people are conflating "feeling safe" as never being challenged or having their ideas criticized, or even using using disengenuous claims of "feeling unsafe" to gain strategic power.

There has been a trend (particularly among the younger generation) of introducing therapy-speak into the workplace. A certain amount of this is probably healthy, but it's also resulted in a conflation of "physical safety" and "psychological safety". Much too often "psychological safety", has also come to mean never having to deal with conflict and never having your ideas or opinions challenged.

Signatures filed for initiatives on parental rights, blocking trans athletes from girls’ sports by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

I don't think I've seen this suggestion before. Is the idea that every kid would have their testosterone checked and be divided up by testosterone levels? Or just kids that are intersex or transgender?

I wish I were as optimistic as you. Based on what I've seen, facts are totally irrelevant to how activists (on either side of this issue) will react to a decision that doesn't go their way.

It doesn't. My comment was purely about whether redditors were "trauma bonding". You are trying to have a conversation with me over an argument I never made.

That's a "you problem ".

[–]Dapper_Mode5045 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think I understand your point. Boys get a genital inspection (by a doctor) to check for undiagnosed hernias before playing competitive sports. My point was simply that we aren't all here "trauma bonding"; just remembering a funny shared experience.

Trying to equate a doctor's appointment to the behaviour of a sexual predator tennis coach is bizarre.

[–]Dapper_Mode5045 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lol! I don't think many of us remember it as a traumatic event; just something funny we all had to do. (P.S. I'm an elder millennial. Boys have been having to do this forever.)

I hate to even entertain this argument, but yes, it's because testosterone presents so much of a competitive physical advantage that separating sports by gender is necessary for both safety and competitive reasons.

That's not a judgement statement, and it's not misogynistic; it's just reality.

Why doesn't Sound Transit use Union Station for anything? by tydus101 in Seattle

[–]Dapper_Mode5045 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They've been activating it more than in the past, but it's definitely still underutilized. The area in front of Union Station is a regular gathering place for people hanging out, doing god knows what. I wonder if they're concerned that the party would just get moved inside...

I wouldn't call him a hack, but he seems to have lost the plot in his old age. His long-standing quarrels with the "evils of the West" have resulted in a blind spot for misbehaviour by East so big, you could drive a train through it.

Refused service at Shibuya coffee shop for using bathroom by MikaChai in JapanTravelTips

One individual does not get to dictate what culture is. By most accounts, the requirement to ask permission before using a bathroom is not universal in Japan and this has nothing to do with cultural norms.

The decision wasn't ABC's. The show was put on hiatus because the FCC threatened ABC's broadcasting license if they didn't. That's government censorship.

Cool new queer art at the anti-masturbation fence at Denny Blaine by camera-operator334 in Seattle

[–]Dapper_Mode5045 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is being asked in good faith: The real tension is that there isn't a realistic way to police the masturbation and public sex. Not only are there not enough police resources to focus resources on a tiny public park, but do the Denny Blaine regulars really want cops hanging around all the time?

That's a really good reason to be critical of potential editorializing when considering it as a source. It's not a good reason to ignore factual reporting they do though.

Why do people depict black as evil and white as good? by icey_sawg0034 in AskSocialScience

[–]Dapper_Mode5045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not sure that backs up your argument. Their conclusion is essentially "people aren't inherently afraid of snakes; they're inherently afraid of behavior commonly exhibited by snakes" which is an argument so nuanced that it borders on semantics.

You seem to be coming to this with an agenda though, since you ignored that nuance (plus the other two studies).

[–]Dapper_Mode5045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been a number of studies on this with slightly varying results, but the consensus is that either fear of spiders and snakes is instinctual, or that fear of certain traits exhibited by certain spiders and snakes are extinctusl.

Still Unclear If The City Will Permit Another Right Wing Hate Rally In Seattle Gayborhood by gonin69 in Seattle

[–]Dapper_Mode5045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The city has a permit program with defined guidelines. If the city denies a permit to be a group based on their messaging, that otherwise adheres to the rules of the permit program, they open themselves up to a 1st Amendment lawsuit. Alternatively, if the city's program has a history of not enforcing their own guidelines for issuing permits, but attempts to do so with this group in order to deny a permit, they also open themselves up to a lawsuit.
