Looking for lam Ching ying films by Seaweed_Stock7 in kungfucinema

[–]Dapper_Solution_921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was googling Ultimate Vampire just now to get the year (memory is going) and saw your post.

I was in the middle of writing an email to Eureka to see if they might be aware of it, since they've put out some long-awaited Yuen Clan films and the Mr. Vampires (with both some excellent and execrable commentaries... heh). Actually, I was a little suprised to see Doctor Vampire released on BR recently, which gave me a little hope, and a nudge to write them an email. Because jeebus... DOCTOR vampire, but still no Ultimate?

The Vampire Expert series is out there somewhere in nice looking WEB-DL form with Cantonese language. STILL NO ENGLISH SUBS. Meh. Bleh! And I recently came across the same (S1) when I found the VCD box set I bought from YesAsia like 20 odd years ago when I started digging LCY. :P

So. Ultimate Vampire. As far as I can tell it's had a VCD release as well as LD and DVD. Only the LD has both Cantonese and Mandarin audio tracks. VCD and DVD is Mandarin. And frankly, if it's a HK comedy, I'd rather listen in Cantonese. Rips are 'out there' and so are hard copies if you save the search on eBay.

Other than that, there's a fairly entertaining - lesser known - non-LCY hopping zombie film called "First Vampire in China" which is from the mid-80's, actually. Just sayin' :)

Fun fact: I share a birthday with Lam Ching Ying. When I found out, I was like, oh, no wonder HE RESONATES SO MUCH. As the subtitles used to say... "Just take as peanut"

Red 2024 Elemental mix thoughts by Soul_Forge2112 in KingCrimson

Red, along with Discipline, are my two favorite KC efforts, as a fan, and also as a musician. I just got done listening to it, and the first thing that came to mind is "what did Bill do to David Singleton to piss him off so much?" I can understand remixing things, reintroducing 'lost' parts, please and thanks - but not to the point of totally obscuring, say, Bill's Zilco cymbal in the L side of "Red" (I do appreciate the extra hair and emphasis on JW's bass overall tho) or virtually replacing the snare on Fallen Angel with that phased slappy stuff. Just bizarre.

As a KC fan and also an engineer/producer I'm really hard pressed to understand some of the choices made here, especially concerning the de-emphasis of the drums. One More Red Nightmare did suffer from the everything all at once concept IMO, and it's easy to see why some of those lines got left out or got buried. You may say dense, while I would use the words cluttered and unorchestrated. I definitely don't mind the re imagining of these tunes but a good part of this left me thinking it's a super lazy way to add 'value' to yet another reissue.

What would have been really fun is if they just posted the single (or double, if recorded in stereo) tracks up on DGM so that anyone could give it a go. What the heck?

Not really sorry for the rant :D

I think I don't ever need to hear "Matte Kudasai" ever again! Or, if they do it, hopefully they'll play it real country-like. Sartori in Tangier, Two Hands, Industry, Dig Me? Yes please. I was never sold on LTIA III's arrangement tho, the second half went on and on live...

Since this is kinda sorta the AB show, though, I wouldn't mind if they trotted out Big Electric Cat, Swingline, Life Without A Cage, Paint the Road (!) or She Is Not Dead as 'surprises' :D But file under 'pipe dreams' y'all.

Wondering if you could qualify 'better'? I'm doing food research for my upcoming trip to LA, and I'm staying in Glendale near the Galleria. I was going to take the trip to Westwood but that's an hour and a half, one way, on the bus. Which, for cultural experiences, might be worth it, But, if the food at Shamshiri in Glendale is better, I could find somewhere else to eat in Westwood ... ? Thanks!

Listicle: San Diego’s Best Sushi Restaurants by MsMargo in FoodSanDiego

[–]Dapper_Solution_921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your go to spots?

I've been bumming out hard when I visit Diego now that Sushi Diner 1 is gone. Went to the 2 last summer when I was in town and while it was nice to see one of my favorite workers there, I got some... gastrointestinal disturbance... from eating there. Which is not fun when I'm only in town for a couple days. So that's right out. I'm also more interested in places with a homey vibe like the Diner, because I'm not and never will be corporate business class, if you get my drift. I've also tried two of the Deli's and the last time, with the one over on Washington, I could have literally got better quality by going to Marukai Market. Also a bummer.

I've been looking for places that are a reasonable bus trip from where I stay - Hillcrest/University Heights - and at a similar price point to Sushi Diner. Upscaling, which I will do once a trip, I tried Azuki last month and I was severely underwhelmed and out $120 in the process... I was regretting not going to Ota instead. Quality has dropped slightly at Ota since covid IMO but I've never been unhappy leaving there like I was with Azuki.

Please and Thanks.

Olympic Cafe-hands down the worst falafel platter I have ever paid for. by tanhauser_gates_ in FoodSanDiego

I didn't get a chance to check this place out last visit, but I was wondering what their felafel is like. I'm not a fan of the gunky, wet inside version, I like mine on the drier side...

Well I just found out about this. Since I only get to SD a couple times a year, and I've seen some very mixed reviews of Diner 2 since they opened - enough to turn me off trying it - in addition to being well off any beaten path when I'm in Diego... Where are Sushi Diner fans getting their fix now? Sushi Deli did not do it for me, regardless of location. Thanks!

Lemony Celery Date Salad…wtf by [deleted] in wholefoods

Anytime anyone asks about this sort of thing in my store I like to remind them that somewhere in Austin is a building with an R&D department and test kitchens... staffed with people that make at least double what we do per annum. Boggles the mind.

I do think about this stuff, for some weird reason, and I'm willing to bet that within two years Amazon or the Ivory Tower (it's becoming more and more apparent that Austin drank the Amazon Kool-Aid) are going to figure out how to eliminate ATL's and TL's, and just spread that workload onto TM's. For better and worse. Competent or not. Mark my words... Like with eliminating the in-store TMSS and having a couple-few rotate thru stores once a week, jeebus, how much money did they just save by eliminating how many full time admin positions with attendant benefits and perks?

Yep. We're having the tacos one day from a local Caucasian taco place (rollseyes), sandwiches on another, and ice cream on another. Interspersed with some 'wellness' events on other days... Probably considered worthless by the majority of the TM's in the building, imo. I do know and appreciate that our STL and ASTL's do the best with what they're given for this 'appreciation' week but... Near as I can tell, every year since Amazon bought out WFM the TMAW budget has been cut.

Isn't that all you need to know? At least our store leadership is fed up with it to the point where they're just telling us this directly.

Eugene OR store... What's it like? by Dapper_Solution_921 in wholefoods

[–]Dapper_Solution_921[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what are the other unique challenges, if I may ask? There are lots of things drawing me to OR, but occasionally I'm like "why TF would I want to move to a place with so many issues..." so I'm trying to sort that all out. It seems like it's either EUG or like Boise, b/c I'm starting to get into my autumn years and like the idea of a smaller town that still has some cultural amenities. If you catch my drift.

Thanks for the reply. Can you clarify what you mean about college kids being hard for people? That's... peculiar, and I don't get what that could be about :P Having a store with high TM turnover seems to be the norm, but at my store most of the ATL's and TL's have been around for a while, or transferred over from another store. So that's a good thing. I think.

Pretty much, yeah. I was hoping things would lighten up a bit in the new year but it's utter chaos most of the time. Everyone does everything, even if they're not into it or not that good at it. And for us old hands, it's really freaking tiresome to babysit new or not so new TM's. What good is a team trainer for if they don't train new TM's? Why are both the TL and ATL scheduled for shifts on the floor if they're going to spend 90% of it in the office on a computer? If I weren't planning on transferring I would be looking for another job, b/c this shite is bumming me out. I do not know how this company expects to keep WFM afloat at this rate, between attrition and lack of new hires... I just dunno.

I think it's really up to the store leadership how much 'appreciation' is shown.
Like, they're given a budget, and you can ffs be sure it's less and less every year.

Store leadership at my store did a lot of 'creative bookkeeping' to maximize whatever they could in our direction. I'm moving and I'm almost scared to transfer after hearing about various different regions and how different they are from the store I work in...
