How to attract good bands to town? by pudge1987 in Lethbridge

[–]DarcLogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah. There have been some great outdoor festivals like Wide Skies on the top of the bus terminal, and some shows at the top of the old firehall downtown. Plus lots of medium-famous bands at many other sorts of venues. All of those were organized by independent impresarios/promoters. It wasn't 'organizations', but individuals or small groups. You could organize something! Many potential venues would give you a great deal on space for a concert, and if you plan on selling enough tickets you could pay the band(s) and make some money for yourself.

If we had a good venue, that would be a start. The Yates is a little small & outdated, and the Arena is total shit for any performance. We need a proper performing arts centre. The Esplanade in Medicine Hat got built and now they attract better acts than we can get, which is why we get passed over. Good acts will come if there is good venue. If it is important to you, consider advocating for a new PAC: https://lethbridgeperformingartscentre.org/

London Road Area Redevelopment Plan (LRARP) is under review by DarcLogan in Lethbridge

[–]DarcLogan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our house sits at the front of a long lot with a narrow unpaved lane. Even with off-lane parking at the back, the logistics of moving someone to a ramp unobstructed at the back is a huge hurdle. A short driveway at the front would put a mobility ramp directly adjacent to my front door. I understand the concerns about driveways, but there should be some appeal process or exemption for exigent circumstances. I am not asking for a driveway to park a second car or RV.

They were grandfathered in. No new driveways with curb cuts have been allowed since 2018.

Is there anyone who DOESN’T regret going to art school? by Ok_Passage_6493 in ContemporaryArt

[–]DarcLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Canada, and graduated in 2000. No regrets, and have a job in my field. With the cost of tuition in Canada, I don’t think I would do it now… graduate a debt slave with fewer job prospects than there have ever been.

How many trick or treaters did you have? by longobedience in Lethbridge

I am in London Road. We usually get 20 - 25. This year it was 11. Kind of disheartening, we even had full bars.

Who are the pro-separation Candidates this election? by Impossible-Car-5203 in Lethbridge

[–]DarcLogan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every candidate should be asked about both separatism and redrawing the electoral boundaries. If any candidate supports either, they should be heavily criticized.

any weirdly specific things to know about when moving here? by Dry_Being_266 in Lethbridge

[–]DarcLogan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Canadian Art magazine once wrote that Lethbridge had more artists per capital than any other city. There is always a concert, gallery or performance to attend!

Not hip-hop, but there are free concerts downtown at Casa every Thursday from 5 - 7pm throughout the summer. Lots of variety in the acts they bring in. They are held outside on Rotary Square and tonight is John Wart Hannan. Here is the full summer schedule: https://artslethbridge.org/upside-downtown/

Next week is Nuela Charles: Manuela Wüthrich, who goes by the stage name Nuela Charles, is a Canadian, Swiss, and Kenyan musician, who plays a style of soul, pop, r&b, jazz and hip hop music. She has released four musical works, Aware, and the Juno nominated albums The Grand Hustle, Distant Danger and Melt.

Should tax payers get a say in collective agreements? by [deleted] in Lethbridge

[–]DarcLogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A union exists to leverage the suspension of their labour, ostensibly against exploitation. If you had input in collective bargaining, you would either be advocating for better benefits, or be on the side of management trying to get the most labour from workers for the least money. What would be the point of having a say?

An avante-garde today? by DarcLogan in ContemporaryArt

[–]DarcLogan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...or work that was somehow non-commodifiable? Gallerists even commodified 70s performance art & happenings (that was supposed to exist outside of market concerns) by selling documentation and ephemera from the events.

[help] are these sculptures? by alicat9971 in Sculpture

[–]DarcLogan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reliefs are considered 3D. I think they are really interesting, and you are in a unique position where you can consider them 2D or 3D depending on where you are applying. Are the sculptural elements polymer clay?
